Women have come a long way in Indian society; from primarily being considered a home maker to leading top multinational corporations and governmental organizations. However, despite several efforts by the government, not many women opt for a Sarkari Naukri. Poor representation of women in govt jobs has been one of the biggest issues that is faced by recruitment agencies like SSC. But recent trends have shed a light of hope and more and more women are now participating in competitive recruitment exams for government jobs offered by Staff Selection Commission. However, still many female aspirants are constantly plagued by the eternal question, ‘Are SSC Jobs a Good Career opportunity for Women?’

To answer this question, we have to look at different aspects and type of opportunities that are provided by SSC CGL exam and are these enough to convince women to opt for them.

Benefits of Govt job through SSC

Sarkari Naukri has always been considered to be a safe and secure job prospect. Along with job security, the work culture and associated benefits like regular promotions, perks and the status attached to the job are the best in a government job, be it for male or female candidates. However, the government sector is still male dominated, which acts as a deterrent for female candidates from take the plunge into the govt job sector.

Type of Jobs on offer through SSC

Staff Selection Commission is a government recruitment agency that conducts annual exams for selecting candidates for Group B and non-technical Group C positions. All the jobs offered by the SSC are for junior to middle level posts in administrative functions of different government departments and ministries. Recruitment for all the posts are done on basis equal opportunity principal for both men and women, and respective category based reservations are applicable for women candidates as well. The jobs on offer through SSC exams are also a gateway for female candidates to be part of government machinery and contribute in overall development of the country.

Career Growth

Like in majority of govt jobs, the career growth of a govt employee in SSC job is structured within the organization. This mean, on basis of experience and seniority the employee will be promoted to higher levels within the organization. The growth is not only in terms of position and monetary compensation but also in the terms of responsibilities and powers associated with the position they are handling.

Special Provisions for Women Candidates

Despite, all the benefits and perks associated with the SSC Jobs; the participation of women candidates opting for govt SSC jobs has not increased significantly. To inspire more women candidates to participate in govt job exams, several special provisions have been put in place by the SSC. The main among them being:

  • Fee Exemption: Women candidates are exempted from paying the examination fees for SSC Combined Graduate Level Exam (SSC CGL) and SSC Combined Higher Secondary Level (10+2) Examination also known as SSC Metric Level Exam.  
  • Age Relaxation: According to the SSC notification, women candidates are also provided age relaxation for the exams as per the table given below:

Upto 35 years of age

Widows/Divorced Women/Women judicially separated and who are not remarried(OBC)

Upto 38 years of age

Widows/Divorced Women/Women judicially separated and who are not remarried(SC/ST)

Upto 40 years of age

While it still remains are personal choice; SSC Jobs as a career choice for women has certainly more advantages than the associated cons. Therefore, there is no doubt that SSC jobs are not only good but a stable and progressive career choice for Women.
