How to decide upon a career, industry and the company from school days

Jul 11, 2017 12:15 IST

For any student, school time is the most crucial phase as it lays the basis of his entire career and future. Students learn many things at school including studies and secondary subjects. They discover their other skills and develop them further. School also mould them as better human beings. When students are about to pass out from school they are usually not sure about which career to choose.

At the School

School time is the foundation-laying period of individuals. They not only get to learn about various subjects but also start developing their interests in fields of their choices and natural talent. Also, the personality starts to develop as well. As the students near the graduation period from school, many of them are clear about the career they will embark on.

career planing from school days

But it is not always that easy to reach for the occupation of your choice. Hence we suggest that you take into consideration few aspects to help you get into the best field.

First of all, you have to consult your parents, teachers, career counsellors, well-wishers, seniors, and your closest friends. It might take some time but all the discussion will only help you narrow down on the most favourable job.

Evaluate Yourself

Then, you have to identify your strengths and weaknesses and evaluate yourself. Ask yourself if a particular undergraduate course or the job you are taking is good for you or not.

No doubt you love your friends and peers but that doesn’t mean that you also follow them blindly and take up the study programme or occupation that they take. What is good for them might not be good for you!

Remember, no two people are alike, not even identical twins and same applies to the best of friends and classmates.

Market Survey

Take your time to roam around and study the market to see for yourself first hand which university, institute, industry or company is offering the course or job according to your capacity. You can always consult the prospectus, set of courses, jobs on offer, the pay package, scope for growth etc.

Investing time in exploring the market will yield good results. That is how you will learn about various places and select the one that is most appropriate.

Apart from the place, you must learn about the study/work environment, the staff, the set-up, guideline, standards, and the overall culture.

It is strongly advised that you go through reviews written by the neutral parties and also the feedback of the previous and current staff.

The managerial staff, the top administration, the vision, and future plans will play a vital role in influencing your decision.

Money and Job Satisfaction

One of the most important factors is the balance between the salary you are getting and the job satisfaction that comes along with the job. You are the sole judge to decide whether what you are doing is according to the payment you are getting, or vice-versa.

It is the fine balance and chances are you will have to make a bit of extra effort to land the right job with right payment.

Conclusion: School students are at a big advantage as they have time on their side and they can always study the market before making the choice of course or job. Hence they should make full use of the resources that are available to them.
