National Defence Academy (NDA) & Naval Academy (NA) Examination (commonly known as NDA Exam) is being organised by Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) for admission to the Army, Navy and Air Force wings of NDA for year wise courses and Indian Naval Academy year wise Course. Tech course and would be given opportunity to join Executive & Technical Branches of Indian Navy.

About NDA Exam

National Defence Academy (NDA) & Naval Academy (NA) Examination (commonly known as NDA Exam) is being organised by Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) for admission to the Army, Navy and Air Force wings of NDA for year wise courses and Indian Naval Academy year wise Course.

The Candidates who qualify the different stages of NDA & NA exam and willing to Joining Indian Naval Academy would undergo four years B. Tech course and would be given opportunity to join Executive & Technical Branches of Indian Navy.

While the candidates opted for NDA, would be sent for their training in respective wing of National Defence Academy (NDA), Khadakwasla (Maharashtra) which is affiliated to Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) for awarding degree.

The candidates after getting admission are called as Cadets. The cadets who successfully complete the program are sent to their respective training academies for one year of training before granting of commission: army cadets go to IMA at Dehradun, Air Force cadets to AFA at Dundigal, Hyderabad, and naval cadets to INA, Ezhimala, Kerala. A cadet can only decline a commission in case of a serious permanent medical condition caused during the program.

NDA & NA Examination

UPSC Conducts NDA & NA Examination twice a year, usually in the months of April and September for which UPSC issues notifications in months of December/January and June respectively. Each year approximately 7 lac candidates appear to NDA & NA exam conducted two times in a year and termed as NDA & NA Examination (I) and NDA & NA Examination (II).

Data wise, out of almost 3.5 lac candidates appearing for NDA exam each time, only 9000 are called for interview by SSB (Services Selection Board). The candidates willing to join Air Force would additionally go for a Pilot Aptitude Battery Test.  Finally, 300-350 cadets are accepted to the academy each semester. About 66 cadets are accepted for the Air Force, 39 for the Navy and 195 for the Army.

The NDA & NA Examination is followed by extensive interviews (conducted by SSB) covering general aptitude, psychological testing, team skills as well as physical and social skills, along with medical tests.

Candidates willing to appear NDA & NA Exam must be 12th pass of 10+2 pattern (for army) and 10+2 with Physics and Mathematics (for Air Force and Navy). Appearing candidates are also eligible to appear the NDA & NA exam.

The National Defence Academy (NDA), established in 1954, is the Joint Services academy of the Indian Armed Forces, where cadets of the three services, the Army, the Navy and the Air Force train together before they go on to pre-commissioning training in their respective service academies. The NDA is located at Khadakwasla near Pune, Maharashtra and has a large campus of 7015 acres. It is the first tri-service academy in the world.

Preparation Tips for NDA | CDS

National Defence Academy & Naval Academy (NDA & NA) which is conducted by Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) will be held on 17th April 2016. If you want to be the pride of the nation and have the courage to serve then the written examination of NDA is the first obstacle to achieving your goal. Various lucrative coaching institutes are available which make sure that you bring laurels but preparation for this toughest exam requires Self determination and Zeal to pass this hurdle. If you have enough of time then more knowledge about the subjects can be taken and if you are left with less time then proper planning and scheduling of the sections should be done. Construction of knowledge in your mind is must as memorizing is short lived. Important tips & tricks are given below to plan the preparation of NDA exam (I):-

1.Know the Syllabus & Exam pattern of NDA Exam:  The first step is to know the syllabus correctly and plans your topics accordingly. Understanding the exam patter is equally important which will help you to benchmark your performance on the day of the examination.  Checking the exam analysis of previous years tells the importance and value of the topics.
2.Start early:  The best time to start preparing for NDA Exam is 11TH because if you keep focus from starting then developing knowledge about each topic will not be problematic by the end. Moreover, NDA syllabus and school curriculum are same so the clearing basic concept is your first step.

3.Coaching/ Mentors:  Sometimes covering syllabus in school is not enough as they are not preparing you for specifically NDA so taking coaching about the same will be beneficial in the long term . As taking guidance from mentors and solving test series in institutes will track your progress. Challenging yourself to score better in each test will make you more determined.

4.Concentration is the key to success: Concentrating during classes and jotting down important points is mandatory for saving time for the last moment. As your own notes help to revise better during the stress examination days.

5.Books & Authors: NCERT Books are the best to know the subject and clears the basics, Arihant publications, Pathfinder for NDA &NA, Mathematics by R.S Aggarwal etc.

6.Mock Test paper: After covering the syllabus the next step is to solve the mock test papers and sample papers, which will define your areas of strength and weakness. Once you know the topics where you are lacking then start preparing and avoid silly mistakes to score better.

7.Speed & Accuracy:  For competition where lakhs of intelligent students are appearing speed with accuracy is essential to score more. Avoid using pen and paper for each calculation of mathematics start using tricks to solve it in the mind first for instance, learn all the tables and square or cube roots which will enhance your speed. Remember negative marking is also included so accuracy should be checked.

8.Time Management: To have officers like qualities one has to start behaving in the same way so Self- discipline is the first and foremost quality, managing your time for each activity will help you to achieve your dream.
