Look through the job description, analyze it and determine whether the work that the company is asking for, is your strength or is it really something that you want to do. Sending out random applications is just a waste of time. Moreover, you'd only get more rejections than interview calls, for employers are neither interested in under qualified nor over qualified candidates.

Tailor your resume to match the job description

Even if you are applying for the same job and same position in two to three different organizations it's better not send the same cover letter to every employer. Always tailor your resume and cover letter to match the tone of the job description sent out by the recruiter. When you speak the same language as that of your potential employer it is much easier for both  of you to find a common ground to connect on. Some companies also use applicant tracking systems, and the softwares are designed to shortlist applications based on certain keywords. In such a scenario it is always safer to speak the same language as that of your employer.

It inculcates a feeling of distrust and gives a wrong impression of your personality to the interviewer.
