Gurmeet Kaur

When it comes to preparing for the board exams and score optimum marks, most of the students often waste their time in deciding the right study material out of the plenteous options available in the market or online. Many of the students end up choosing the wrong study materials which may even lead them to failure. National Council of Education, Research and Training (NCERT) has been attributed the role of developing as well as distributing textbooks to the students at the primary and secondary level. These books, generally named NCERT books, are highly useful for the CBSE students as they prepare for their annual exams. These books focus on fundamentals to help students clear the basic concepts. NCERT books are all-inclusive and accomplished in their own sense and CBSE will hardly ask anything beyond these books.

To add to the learning skill of students and test their comprehension, information recall, analytical thinking and problem-solving ability, the Department of Education in Science and Mathematics (DESM) along with NCERT, developed some excellent problems called ‘Exemplar Problems’ in Science and Mathematics for secondary and higher secondary levels. These problems are not meant to serve merely as a question bank for examinations but are primarily meant to improve the quality of teaching and learning in schools. Students can benefit themselves by attempting the exercises given in the book for self-assessment and also in mastering the basic techniques of solving complex problems.

All you need to do during the exams is just to revise the formulas, the terms and their execution. That’s why NCERT books are considered ideal for a thorough and comprehensive study to develop a clear concept.

4. Best for the CBSE board exams

If you go through the past years’ exam papers, you will find that most of the questions asked in the papers are taken directly or indirectly from NCERT books. In fact, for the last two years the CBSE Class 12 Mathematics exam, which was claimed to be the toughest each year, contained most of the questions from NCERT Exemplar Problems.  Many times CBSE asks twisted questions in the board papers. Then the students who simply mug up the NCERT books, claim that the paper is out of the syllabus. However, one needs to understand that by studying NCERT books means that you should clarify your concepts and learn to apply them. It is important to read and study these books carefully because usually, nothing beyond these books is asked.

5. Offers a number of problems to practice

However hard you work on a topic, you can’t succeed until you practice the same. In NCERT books, you will find questions at the end of chapters. These can be short or long answer type quizzes, match-the-following or fill-in-the-blanks questions. Thus, in order to score optimum marks in the board papers, it is very important for the students to practice a variety of questions. In addition to these exercise questions, it’s also important to practice the NCERT Exemplar problems. This will help you have an easy hand at the twisted questions as well.
