Solid CO2 is known as dry ice. It sublimes directly and does not wet the surface like an ordinary ice. Therefore, it is called dry ice.
Q. Explain the effect of increasing temperature of a liquid, on intermolecular forces operating between its particles. What will happen to the viscosity of a liquid it its temperature is increased?
If temperature of liquid is increased than the kinetic energy of the molecules will also increase due to which it can overcome the intermolecular forces of attraction and hence the liquid can flow more easily.
Q. Explain why cations are smaller and anions are larger in radii than their parent atoms?
Ionic radius of cation is always smaller than the parent atom because the loss of one or more electrons increases the effective nuclear charge. As a result the force of attraction of nucleus for the electrons increases and hence the ionic radii decreases.
In contrast, the ionic radius of an anion is always larger than its parent atom because the addition of one or more electron decreases the effective nuclear charge.
