Q2. The National Summit on Fortification of Food to combat malnutrition in the country was recently inaugurated. Consider the following statements regarding food fortification:

1. Food fortification or enrichment is the process of adding micronutrients to food.
2. Fortification requires neither changes in existing food patterns, habits nor individual compliance.

Choose the correct statements?

a) Only 1
b) Only 2
c) Both 1 and 2
d) None of the above

Answer: c

Food fortification or enrichment is the process of adding micronutrients (essential trace elements and vitamins) to food. It may be a purely commercial choice to provide extra nutrients in a food, while other times it is a public health policy which aims to reduce the number of people with dietary deficiencies within a population.
Fortification requires neither changes in existing food patterns, habits nor individual compliance. It is socio-culturally acceptable and does not alter the characteristics of the food.
It can be introduced quickly and can produce nutritional benefits for populations in a short period of time. It is safe and cost effective, especially if advantage is taken of the existing technology and delivery platforms.

Q3. The Government of India recently launched the Mining Surveillance System (MSS) for curbing illegal mining activities. Which of the following statements is correct regarding this system?

a) Mining Surveillance System has been developed under the Digital India Programme.
b) Mining Surveillance System will use space technology for curbing illegal mining activity in the country.
c) Ministry of Mines, through ISRO, has developed the Mining Surveillance System.
d) Both (a) and (b)

Answer: d

MSS is a satellite-based monitoring system which aims to establish a regime of responsive mineral administration, through public participation, by curbing instances of illegal mining activity through automatic remote sensing detection technology.
Ministry of Mines, through Indian Bureau of Mines (IBM), has developed the MSS to use space technology for curbing illegal mining activity in the country.

Been developed under the Digital India Programme, MSS is one of the first such surveillance systems developed in the world using space technology. The current system of monitoring of illegal mining activity is based on local complaints and unconfirmed information.
There is no robust mechanism to monitor the action taken on such complaints. Automatic software leveraging image processing technology will generate automatic triggers of unauthorized activities.

A user-friendly mobile app has been created which can be used by these officials to submit compliance reports of their inspections. The mobile app also aims to establish a participative monitoring system where the citizens also can use this app and report unusual mining activity.

Q4. Which of the following Schedule I (Indian Wildlife Act 1972) Indian mammal has the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) decided to put on the critically endangered species list?

a) Dugong Dugong
b) Gangetic dolphin
c) Kashmir Stag
d) Tiger

Answer: c

The International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) has recently decided to declare the Kashmiri Red Stag (which is also known as Hangul) as a critically endangered species.
The critically endangered status that is given to the Kashmiri Red Stag will help it to get more protection and enhance the conservation efforts to increase its continuously declining population.

The Kashmir stag is found in dense riverine forests in the high valleys and mountains of the Kashmir Valley and northern Chamba district in Himachal Pradesh. In Kashmir, it's found in the Dachigam National Park where it receives protection but elsewhere it is more at risk.
In the 1940s, the population was between 3000 and 5000 individuals, but since then habitat destruction, over-grazing by domestic livestock and poaching have greatly reduced that dramatically. Once found in thousands in the mountains of Kashmir Valley, the population of the famed Kashmir red deer has dwindled to less than 150.

Choose the correct statements?

a) Only 1

c) Both 1 and 2
d) None of the above

Answer: a

The technology has been developed jointly by Indian Railways (IR) and Defence Research & Development Organization (DRDO) for railway passenger coaches through a MoU.

Ministry of Railways has inaugurated ‘First Green Train Corridor-Rameswaram-Manamadurai’ free from human waste discharge from trains.
After Rameswarm-Manamadurai, Okha-Kanalas Junction(141 Kms), Porbandar-Wansjaliya (34 Kms) and Jammu-Katra(78 Kms) would also be taken up for making them free from human waste discharge from trains.

This environment friendly, low cost and robust technology is the first of its kind in Railway Systems in the world. In the bio-toilet fitted coaches, human waste is collected in tanks below the toilets and the same is decomposed by a consortium of bacteria.
