IAS Prelims 2016 : Environment and Ecology : Syllabus Analysis

This section in IAS Prelims Exam syllabus comprises of “General issues on Environmental ecology, Bio-diversity and Climate Change - that do not require subject specialization” as quoted in UPSC IAS Prelims syllabus. It is one of the toughest sections of IAS Prelims Exam. A large number of questions have been appearing from this section. Around 25 to 30 questions were there in IAS Prelims Exam from this section in 2014 and 2015.

The syllabus for this section given by UPSC is not exhaustive. However, going by previous year questions, we can find out the important sub-topics from where questions can be expected. These include international bodies and treaties, endangered and vulnerable flora and fauna, environmental pollution, global climate change, environmental conservation and management, important national legislations and policies related to environment.

Questions from this section are moderate to difficult in nature. Candidates cannot afford to undermine the importance of this section as a large number of questions have been appearing in IAS Prelims Exam from this section. All kind of questions- static, dynamic and contemporary have been asked from this section. So candidates need to clarify their fundamentals as well as keep tab on current news and events.

Candidates should extensively use internet to prepare for this section as the diverse topics and sub-topics under this section cannot be found in a single book. Analysing nature of question from previous year papers and preparing accordingly will help candidates to focus on only relevant topics. Practicing multiple choice questions should also be a part of preparation of this section.
