IAS Prelims 2016 : Indian and World Geography : Syllabus Analysis

Indian Geography and World Geography provide the real depth in the IAS Prelims Syllabus as most of the questions are linked directly or indirectly with Geography.  Geography for IAS Exam is important for both IAS Prelims and IAS Main Exam. The questions asked in Prelims are from physical, Social and Economic Geography of India as well as the world. The number of questions from Geography varies from 10-20 in the IAS Prelims Exam.

Physical geography includes geomorphology, climatology, oceanography, environmental geography, etc.  Social geography includes settlement patterns, population composition, human development, etc. Economic geography comprises of topics like primary, secondary and tertiary activities, transport, communication and trade.

Physical geography of India covers a wide variety of topics important among which are India’s location and setting, structure and physiographic structures of India, drainage system, climate, natural vegetation, soils, natural hazards and disasters. Social and Economic geography of India is significant from both Prelims and Main Exam perspective.

Topics such as population, migration, settlements, land resources, Indian agriculture, water resources, mineral and energy resources, industries and services sector, transport and communication, planning, regional development and sustainable development form parts of social and economic geography of India.

Questions in the previous year papers asked about the location of important places, landforms and geographical features in India and the world. For example in 2014 there was a question on the location of ten degree channel. Similarly there was a question on location of Turkey.

It should be prepared well by the candidates as questions are of easy to moderate level. Candidates should go through past year papers to understand the nature of questions being asked and then prepare accordingly.
