After a very tough and complicated mains examination, those who have made it to the interview round must be feeling very relieved. An interview is a test of your character and obviously, you can never expect to have only common questions in the interview. You must be prepared to face anything and everything in the process.
1. Tell us something about yourself
- This is the first thing you will hear after entering the room in most of the cases. This is your opportunity to start controlling the whole interview. Start with your name and your place of origin, mention your educational background and family background, your hobbies and last but not the least, your work experience, if any. Do not go overboard with family details since the interviewers only need to know your background and not the daily routine of your siblings.
2. What is your objective of joining banking sector?
- This is your chance to impress the interview panel. Start with the nature the job such as customer dealings, financial assistance to poor and the social footprint you can leave by being a banker. The next thing on the line will be the social status you will gain by being a banker and last but not the least, the promotional aspect of the job. These will show you as an ambitious, sincere and social person. What else do they need in a banker?
3. Being a metro city boy / girl, are you comfortable in working in rural areas?
- This is a question to test your honesty. Nobody wants rural posting and this is evident from the fact that the government had to make it mandatory for promotions in the banking sector. So, never go over the top in this question. Say politely that you are ready to face any and every challenge that comes your way and in this, the rural service criteria is also included.
4. If you get a better opportunity, will you leave banking or stick to it even then?
- Again, an honesty check and you should be logical in your answer. Nobody wants to waste an opportunity to have a better opportunity. You are not an exception and the interviewers know the same. Your answer should mention this basic human trait that everybody tries for better opportunities and if you get one, you will leave the bank for it. The interviewers want to hear the truth, not false sugar coating.
5. You are made the Branch Manager of a branch which is running in losses. What approach will you undertake to correct the situation?
- As a branch manager, I shall first try to understand the areas where the branch is losing money unnecessarily and will first try to control that. After that, I will try to acquire new business and will focus on low cost deposits such as CASA deposits and retail advances so that they are mostly secure and at the same time, earning from the branch increases. Another important thing will be to decrease the existing NPA in the branch and also improve the customer service so that people prefer our bank over others.
6. What are the major issues threatening the banking sector at present?
- The first thing that needs attention is obviously the non performing assets issue since it can make or break the balance sheet of the bank. Second thing will be complying with the regulatory aspects of banking such as Basel III framework where you require more capital to be infused. Next important thing is the utilization of human resources properly as staff shortage affects customer service a lot.
7. Where do you see yourself after five years?
- This is a question that tests your future planning and the ambition you have. But remember that you need to say something that is realistic and is actually possible to achieve within the next five years. You can go like this – I want to learn as many facets of banking as possible in the coming years and also would try to get as many promotions as possible during the time.
8. What are your strengths and weaknesses?
- This is a part of your SWOT analysis and the interviewers expect you have done it thoroughly before coming to the interview. State only those strengths that may come in handy in banking such as good communication skills, problem solving ability, soft skills, customer interaction etc whereas for weakness, you always should say something that actually translates into strength such as I am a workaholic person or I am a perfectionist etc. The interviewers want to see whether you have read yourself properly through this question.
9. Why should we hire you?
- Well, the ball is in your court now and you have to make the most of it. First thing should be the impact you can make in the organization with your set of skills. You can deal with customers very well and you can sell products very well etc. You have the ability to convince people your way and trust me, in banking, you will be valued a lot if you have this within you. Focus on some of the issues facing the organization and offer your skills as a solution to them. This will serve two purposes: They will know that you have done your homework and at the same time, they will very easily visualize your role in the organization.
10. You are an engineer / humanities graduate / science graduate etc. You have no background knowledge of banking. How will you be able to work in a bank?
- Keep in mind this question is not to catch you off guard because the minimum qualification required for IBPS PO is a graduate in any stream and you possess that. Focus on your skills acquired through your academic background such as an engineer will have technological expertise and it can be used in the technological advancement of the bank along with financial inclusion through technology. As an arts graduate, you have good communication skills and analyzing ability, these are very important for banking. Try to focus on your set of skills and answer positively. The question is to make you relate your skills to banking sector requirements and nothing else.
Interview is the last hurdle you need to cross before getting entry in a public sector bank of the country as an officer. You should prepare for it well and it has always been observed that despite having low marks in written, you stand a chance of final selection with a good interview.
