Right Age to Start IAS Preparation
This is one of the most common questions arising in the minds of folks who wish to become a civil servant that “what is the ideal age to start IAS preparation”. As per the UPSC’s notification, currently, the minimum age criteria has been set as 21 years to appear in the Civil Services IAS Exam. Generally, a number of kids develop his/her lifetime dream of becoming a civil servant after watching the officers of the same rank around their locality or in an event of their educational institutions. The nature of power possessed by an IAS or IPS officer and the honour they get into the society or from the people inspire the most kids to become an officer of the same rank. This is the case of a progressive society where a kid develops his/her lifetime dream after analysing niceties in their surroundings but most of them are clueless about the ideal time or age to fulfil their dreams. This is also true that many of them lost their dreams while finding the answers of such common questions but a lot of them come out of their dream as a winner.
Many of the IAS toppers have revealed that it was their childhood dream to become an IAS or IPS officer. They followed their dream from their childhood phase. Some of them were started preparing for IAS Exam from schooldays while some of them started preparing for IAS Exam after completing senior secondary education and bachelor degree courses. However, it is necessary to know what should be the ideal age to start IAS preparation. Here, we will discuss the about the ideal age to start IAS preparation.
From the age of 16 years
Many students, who belong to a family of civil servants, are often inspired to become a civil servant like their elder members of the family. Kids of the family having such background start preparing for IAS Exam just after finishing class 10th board exam. The ideal age for appearing in the class 10th board exam is 16 years. Such students find enough time to understand the IAS selection process and the basic requirements needed to become an IAS or IPS officer. Starting IAS preparation at such an early age allows them to construct a much stronger foundation for IAS Exam. In the process, they can study NCERT textbooks which are simultaneously helpful of IAS Exam but there is the possibility of hampering the learning process of a student by doing a UPSC IAS specific study at such an early age. Time to time, UPSC changes its pattern, process and the basic requirement to appear in the UPSC IAS Exam which can alter the understanding of the students preparing for IAS Exam from an early age. Further, it can create a higher level of frustration and burnout among such student after failing in the initial attempts of UPSC IAS Exam.
From the age of 18 years
Some of the students choose to do civil services IAS Exam preparation at the age of 18 years and this is the standard age known for completing senior secondary courses. After completing the senior secondary course, a student will pursue bachelor courses in which they can opt the subjects of their own choice by keeping UPSC IAS Exam in mind. As per the recent trend most of the students at the age of 18 years, taking the decision of joining lucrative civil services. It has also been observed that the subject of their choice in bachelor degree helps an IAS aspirant to decide the Optional Subjects in IAS Mains Exam. It is an advantageous move to opt the subject of bachelor degree as an IAS Mains Optional Subject which makes more comfortable in dealing the huge syllabus for UPSC IAS Exam. After completing the bachelor course in three or four years, at the age of 21 years or 22 years an IAS aspirant can appear in the UPSC IAS Exam. There is a huge possibility that an IAS aspirant can crack the IAS Exam in his/her first attempt if they followed the required pattern of UPSC IAS Exam at the age of 21 years or 22 years.
From the age of 21 years
Many students decide to do the IAS preparation at the age of 21 years or 22 years when they complete their bachelor degree courses. This is the time when they can devote their whole time in doing IAS preparation. A number of IAS toppers who decided to do start IAS preparation at this age. IAS preparation needs full commitment and at this age, generally, a student completes the minimum eligibility criteria required to appear in the UPSC IAS Exam. There is no such a mandatory course to pursue after completing a bachelor degree course. So, there will be an ample time to do a sincere study only for UPSC IAS Exam or it has been up to the choice of an IAS aspirant to pursue a post-graduation course. However, it is manageable and a lot of IAS aspirants pursuing a post graduation degree have cleared the UPSC IAS Exam.
There is no such specific or perfect age to start IAS preparation, but after analysing the success rate of IAS Toppers; we can make a generalised statement that an IAS aspirant should start IAS preparation just after completing the graduation course at the age of 21 years or 22 years. At the same time, we can see, many IAS toppers have got success in IAS Exam started IAS preparation after 25 years. An IAS aspirant should keep the upper age limit criteria in his/her mind and their own ability to cover the huge UPSC syllabus in a given time frame of one year.
