IIM Nagpur: 10 per cent quota for EWS, candidates to furnish family income details

IIM Nagpur, one of the leading MBA institute has now brought into action, 10 per cent quota for the candidates belonging to the economically weaker section (EWS). This quota has been created from the seats that have been allocated for the General section candidates who are eligible for admission to 2019-21 session.

Why EWS quota implemented?      

Consequently, IIM Nagpur has also increased current 120 seats to 130 seats in lieu of the quota being reserved for the EWS candidates. The candidates applying for the EWS quota have also been asked to furnish the income and asset details of their family. This move from the IIM-N came after the 124th Amendment Bill in the Constitution of India which says that 10 per cent reservation in jobs and education shall be granted to the EWS candidates belonging to the General quota candidates. The Bill was passed in the January session of the Parliament in 2019.

IIM Director's take on the 124th Amendment

On this new addition, IIM-N Director, L S Murty, commented that the institute welcomes this amendment and has taken actions to respect the decision of the government. IIM Nagpur has increased their intake to 130 for 2019-20 on account of infrastructure constraints. They have implemented the scheme of the government and are putting efforts to fill the 10 per cent EWS quota by2020-21 in accordance with the government's guidelines. He also mentioned that although the center has directed all the Educational Institutes to implement this direction, however set standards need to be formulated in educational institutes to implement this amendment in a correct way.

Measure taken to implement EWS quota

IIM Nagpur has asked the list of shortlisted candidates to furnish the family income and asset details as soon as possible, so that the candidates falling in the purview of EWS quota can be identified. Candidates can upload the required documents on the institute's website and furnish complete details about the family earnings. The online admission portal also allows for a window in which candidates can make requisite changes if needed.

Who falls under the EWS quota?

Various criteria that deem a candidate to fall under the cadre of EWS quota are as under:

  • Candidates not belonging to the quota for Scheduled Castes, Scheduled Tribes and Other Backward Classes
  • Families have a gross annual income below Rs. 8 lakh and below

Candidates are required to provide the details about the source of income. The source could be any such as salary, agriculture, business, profession. Only after providing this information, candidates would be able to take benefit of the reservations kept for the EWS candidates by IIM Nagpur.

Who doesn't have access to EWS quota?

Irrespective of the family income, candidates who fall under this category are not eligible to receive EWS quota:

  • Candidates whose families own five acres of agricultural land and above,
  • who owe a residential flat of 1,000 sq. ft. and above,
  • whose parents possess a residential plot of 100 sq. yards and above in notified municipalities, whose parents owe a residential plot of 200 sq. yards and above in areas other than the notified municipalities

These candidates are excluded from the privileges of getting benefits under the EWS quota.
