A few sample questions and their solutions are given below:

Q. What are ‘fuel cells’? Write cathode and anode reaction in a fuel cell.

Ans.

Galvanic cells which use energy of combustion of fuels like H2, CH4, CH3OH, etc., as the source to produce electrical energy are called fuel cells. The fuel cells are pollution free and have high efficiency.

Cell reaction :

At anode: 2H2(g) + 4OH (aq) → 4H2O(l) + 4e

At cathode: O2(g) + 2H2O(l) + 4e → 4OH (aq)

Q. viii. Write the electronic configuration of the following elements:

a. Sulphur (Z = 16)                  b.   Krypton (Z = 36)

Ans.

Sulphur (Z = 16): 1s2 2s2 2p6 3s2 3p4

Krypton (Z = 36): 1s2 2s2 2p6 3s2 3p6 3d10 4s2 4p6

Q. 0.05 M NaOH solution offered a resistance of 31.6W in a conductivity cell at 298 K. If the cell constant of the cell is 0.367 cm-1, calculate the molar conductivity of NaOH solution.

Ans.

Q. What is ‘effective atomic number’ (EAN)?

Calculate the effective atomic number of the central metal atom in the following compounds:

a. K4Fe(CN)6 Fe (Z = 26)

b. Cr(CO)6 Cr (Z = 24)

Ans.

The sum of the number of electrons, donated by all ligands and those present on the central metal ion or atom in complex is called as effective atomic number (EAN).

EAN = [Atomic number of metal, Z – (Oxidation state of the metal, O) + 2(Coordination number of the metal, C)].

a. K4Fe(CN)6 Fe (Z = 26)

Z = 26, O = +2, C = 6

EAN = Z − X + 2 × Y = 26 – 2 + (2 × 6) = 36

b. Cr(CO)6 Cr (Z = 24)

Z = 24, O = 0 , C = 6

EAN = Z − X + 2 × Y = 24 + (2 × 6) = 36
