Questions you can ask your interviewer in a job interviewGaurav Macwan
With millions of job seekers vying for job, job interviews in India are considered to be a one-way street where the candidate appearing for the interview has to convince the interviewer to hire them. Although this is the generally followed practice, it is utterly wrong. Just like any other discussion, even job interviewers are a two-way street where questions and clarifications can be put forth by both the parties i.e. interviewers as well as interview candidates / job seekers.
Many candidates in the desperation of getting a job often don’t ask the important questions that can provide vital clarity regarding the role that you would be joining after clearing the interview. This often leads to candidates joining job profiles that they are not ready for or are not sure if they can handle the pressure or work expected from them.
To avoid such problems after being hired, it is better if you make it a habit to ask a few important questions to your interviewers up-front. This practice will help you get good clarity about the job you are taking up and also give you an opportunity to go in prepared for it. So, here are a few important questions you must ask your interviewer in a job interview.
One of the most important aspects that is ignored by job seekers during an interview process is to understand the day-to-day responsibilities that await them as part of their job. At times, many candidates are often surprised by the amount of work that is expected out of them post joining because they failed to seek clarity about it during the interview process. So, always make sure that you get good understanding about all your day-to-day activities and the responsibilities you would be handling as part of your job.
Skills or Qualities required for the role
Another topic that has been a bone of contention of many job seekers post being selected for a job is the skills or qualities required for the role. For every job seeker, there are a few core skills that they are master of and then there are other skills which they know or can learn with a bit of hard work. But at times, job seekers often inflate or overstate their abilities or skills for a particular job without realizing that they would be pivotal to their job profile and suffer later on. Therefore, always make sure that youtake up jobs for which you possess the core skills. This clarity about the skills and qualities required for a job profile can be sought from the interviewer.
Remember, after joining an organization, you are going to spend at least 8 hours every single day in office. Therefore, apart from work that you do, the work-culture of the organization you are joining will also play a major role in the development of your career. Therefore, ask your interviewer basic questions about the work culture of the company and get a feel if you fit into it easily. For instance, if you are into a creative professional, joining a financial firm where number crunching is a way of life might not bode so well for you.
The Way Ahead
Lastly, right before you leave your interview, try to understand the scope of the job role you are filling. Is it a temporary role or something that is developed just for a short period of time? Or is it a role that is integral to business model and strategy of the company. This will give you a fair bit of idea about your career path that lies ahead for you. If you intend to become a manager in next few years, evaluating the practical chances of it is very important. So, seek clarification about the career path and growth aspects of the job profile you are joining from the interviewer.
These are just a few of the important questions about which you must seek clarification from your interviewer. Asking these questions upfront will not only help you clarify important doubts about your future job but will also exhibit the seriousness about the job and profile before the interviewer.
