4 Questions You Must Ask Yourself Before Choosing A Career
What is the right career? This is one of the most difficult questions in the life of a student. Deciding right career at an early stage is not an easy task for a student.
A few years back (about 30 years to 40 years), there was a set or specific pattern in the career profile of many people and that is they graduated, took a job, and awaited promotion. They spent a large span of their lifetime in the same company and they hardly switched from one company to another.
But the modern scenario is completely different. Most people switch from one company to another company very frequently after graduation. Some people drop out from college to work on their business ideas.
Some of the prominent reasons for such trends are early promotions, a huge hike in salary, comprehensive experience etc.
While moving from one company to the other may also lead to wastage of time and add flaws to the resume. These may be disadvantages associated with such trends.

Before asking an obvious question like, “What is right career for me?” ask some indirect questions like, “What it is you love to do most?” or “Are you passionate about specific work?
After that, look over internet for career opportunities, growth, and salary package etc., related to that work. This will help you to decide if you can make a career in that field.
Caution: If you love playing computer games or working on computers than it doesn’t mean that you opt for B.tech (in Computer Science) because it is related to coding or required a good knowledge of mathematics. You need to do an extensive research about each and every perspective of that career.
2 # What is your personality type? OR What type of work environment do you prefer?
Some people love the corporate culture of big cities; they prefer good working environment. Some other people love to be in business; they do not care about nice working environment or corporate culture much. After discovering about your interest in work, you should try to find your personality type and decide what kind of life you want. Working environment and job satisfaction are directly proportional to each other.
3 # Where do you want to live in future?
Some people love to live in their hometown, some want to stay abroad. After discovering your interest and personality type you should think where you will like to live in future. You like to live and grow professionally in your home or you want to live in abroad. It might be possible that the career you will select may have more opportunities abroad. You need to find the connection between your work, personality type and the place where you would like to live in future.
4 # Where do you see yourself after ten years or twenty years?
This is one of the most important questions you can ask yourself. Where will you be after 10 years? You want to be a CEO of any reputed company or you want to gain experience from different companies and want to setup your own after a specific number of years.
If you have already found your area of interest, personality type and the place you want to live, then you can make a blueprint of your career for 10 to 20 years ahead.
You can even target positions in reputed companies at a very early stage and you can also gain qualification and experience accordingly to become eligible for same.
These are some basic and most important questions that most of the career guidance counselors ask a person. Most of the times students are asked to do a little homework before asking questions to a professional career counsellor.
You can also write down answers to above career guidance related questions in a diary with all pros and cons. Answering of these career planning questions may take lots of time. But, it will help you to choose correct career path for yourself without spending any penny.
