Promotion of DSP in BPSC
Promotion is granted to the Police Officers recruited by BPSC through the Departmental Promotion Committee, which is headed by the Chairman of the Commission, in accordance with the rules framed by the State Government. Here is the hierarchy of seniority in the Police Department:
Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP)→ Additional Superintendent of Police (ASP) → Superintendent of Police (SP) → Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) → Deputy Inspector General of Police (DIGP) → Inspector General of Police (IGP) → Additional Director General of Police (ADGP) → Director General of Police (DGP)
The BPSC promotes its Police Officers during their services in the state. The first promotion to the DSP is granted after 7 or 8 years of the service which makes a DSP Additional Superintendent of Police (ASP). After completing 12 or 13 years of the service, the ASP is promoted to the rank of Superintendent of Police (SP) or DCP and the Officers will get Senior Superintendent of Police rank (SSP) i.e. selection grade. After this, a name list will be sent to the UPSC by the state PCS according to the satisfactory service records of the SSPs. After that they will become conferred IPS. There are more ranks in the Police Department that one can reach in one’s career. But, an Officer from the State Pcs has less chances to reach that pinnacle. The promotion policy is such that it takes more years of service to reach the height and when the moment comes, usually the Officers are left with the few years of service. So, a Police Officer in BPSC is granted two or three promotions during his service.
