Civil Services Preparation Demands Right Start

Faraz Ahmad Qureshi, who successfully cracked Civil Services examination 2009, talks to jagranjosh.com about the early preparation for civil services examination

Jagran Josh: When did you start thinking of becoming a civil servant and when did you actually start the preparation for the exam?
FA Qureshi: I resolved to be a civil servant during my graduation. I started my preparation for civil service exam in the year 2005.

Jagran Josh: How did you feel at the initial stage of preparation for this exam? Did it appear tough? How did you manage to overcome that?
FA Qureshi: In fact, at the very start, I thought this exam as just one of the other exams. After my first attempt I realized its difficulty level. It took me some time to change my approach from typically ‘academic’ (textbook oriented) to ‘applied knowledge’. But as an adage goes – “no matter how noble your deeds are, you can’t be in heaven without dying” – I worked harder to match the level of this exam.

Jagran Josh: You focused only on civil services or any other examination was on your mind during your preparation?
FA Qureshi: I single mindedly prepared for civil service exam only. I also secured a rank in MP State Service exam

Jagran Josh: What mistakes did you make in your previous attempts? How did you identify your mistakes and how did you change your strategy according to that?
FA Qureshi: As I have mentioned earlier, my approach was rather ‘academic’ in my previous attempts. I tried to by heart everything. When this could not fetch me good marks, I changed my approach and I started to incorporate real-life examples in my answers.
