The Common Law Admission Test, commonly known as CLAT, is conducted on a national level basis by one of the seven top Law institutes of India. It is an entrance exam for students who want to pursue 5 years integrated law course and PG Course in 14 best law institutes of India. Some of the other law institutes and universities of India also consider CLAT scores as the criterion to give admission to law aspirants.

CLAT Syllabus – Sectional Composition

The syllabus of CLAT is divided into following sections:

  • English Including Comprehension
  • General Knowledge and Currents Affairs
  • Mathematics
  • Legal Aptitude
  • Logical Reasoning

CLAT Syllabus 2019 for UG Exam

GK & Current Affairs

This sections comprises of following topics

  • Ancient, Medieval, Modern and World History
  • Geography
  • Economics (Outline of Indian Economy, Five Year Plans, National Income of India, Indian Tax Structure)
  • Science and technology Environment & Ecology
  • General Science National & International Burning topics
  • Books and Authors

English (with Comprehension)

The CLAT syllabus for English includes following topics:

  • Vocabulary
  • Grammar Usage and errors

  • English proficiency – idioms and phrases

  • Sentence improvement

Legal Aptitude

Legal Aptitude questions are framed as legal propositions having a set of facts that satisfy the propositions where one has to analyze suitable proposition and answer questions based on the given set of facts. Apart from it questions will be asked from following topics:

Logical Reasoning

This section features questions such as logical links, identify patterns and rectifying illogical arguments.  This particular section will test your ability to solve a wide variety of logical reasoning questions such as syllogisms, logical sequences, and analogies. 

CLAT Syllabus 2019 for PG Exam

  • Jurisprudence

It is the theoretical study of law studied to gain a deeper understanding of legal systems, legal reasoning, legal institutions and their role in the society.

  • Law of Torts

It is a new common law development supplemented by codifying statutes including statutes governing damages.

  • Criminal Law

 It is a body which deals with crimes. It includes threatening, harmful, or otherwise endangering to the property, health, safety, and moral welfare of people inclusive of one's self.

  • Family Law

This section will include questions related to marriage, domestic partnership, adoption, paternity, child custody, surrogacy and juvenile law.

  • International Law

It is the set of rules generally regarded and accepted as binding in relations between states and between nations. It serves as a framework for the practice of stable and organized international relations.

  • Property Law

Property law is the area of law that governs the various forms of ownership and tenancy in real property and in personal property, within the common law legal system.

  • Intellectual Property Law

It deals with the rules for securing and enforcing legal rights to inventions, designs, and artistic works. Just as the law protects ownership of personal property and real estate, so too does it protect the exclusive control of intangible assets.

  • Law of Contracts

A contract is an agreement between two or more parties to perform a service, provide a product or commit to an act and is enforceable by law. There are several types of contracts, and each has specific terms and conditions. The law governing the same can be defined as the law of contracts.

CLAT 2019 – Marking Scheme

CLAT for undergraduate programs is of total 200 marks, whereas exam for postgraduate programs aggregates of 150 marks. Each question will carry 1 mark each. Questions would be of objective-nature where the candidates will be required to choose one option out of the four options given. There will be a negative marking of 0.25 marks for each incorrect answer and 0 marks are awarded to non-attempted questions.
