There would be 20 questions for the data interpretation and 12 questions for logical reasoning. One could expect 8 questions on tables, 4 on caselets, 4 on line graph, and another 4 on stacked bar graph. CAT 2017 Syllabus: A Detailed Review of all the Sections

One thing you need handy before exactly getting with data interpretation section is calculation. Make sure you know tables well, in order to save time during the exam. Learn quick calculation techniques. Vedic maths can provide you a variety of shortcuts for the same. Try calculating in mind, without using pen/pencil and paper. Initially, this might take a little time. But, as you practice, you would find that in fractions of seconds you can handle data effectively. Calculation speed and accuracy is must.

For logical reasoning, you would need calculation tips, but not much. Also, reading the question well is important. Do not assume anything. What is said should be followed, and what is not, should not be assumed. Words like "if", "only", "all", "some", "none", "only", "unless", "if and only if", etc. play an important role. Do not ignore them.

Now is the most important thing, how to go about preparation? Books and brains and passion might not work, if not accompanied by the right strategy. You need to work smart and really smart to score good in CAT.

Here are a few tips and tricks which would help you score well in exam.

You need to know and understand the pattern for the examination well. Practice each type of question expected. Go for all type of probable questions that could be asked in the exam. It can be done through going through the previous year pares, mock tests and various books. Few books have been suggested above.

Practice makes the man perfect. You need to practice both the topics on a routine basis. Take previous year test papers. This will let you analyse the trend over the years. Also, practice mock tests. It will give you a perfect rehearsal before the exam. Take each type of question daily.

We have discussed this above as well. One needs to have accuracy and speed at calculation. This comes with practice again. Vedic mathematics techniques would help in speeding calculation. There are various shortcut techniques which would help in calculation.

Routine is important. The above mentioned tips need to be followed on a daily basis. Practicing many questions in a day and then not working on the section for rest two or three days can mess up things. Study limited (yes not very limited) but on routine basis.

Sometimes, a candidate may look at the options and try to approximate the answer. However, an approximation can be dangerous, if the options vary from each other in a range of ±2.  SO it's better to calculate answers exactly.

I hope all this helps you score good in CAT. Practice well, be confident, avoid assumptions and approximations, read question properly, and crack the CAT.

All the best !!
