Common Admission Test or CAT is one of the most popular MBA entrance exams in the country. There is a long list of colleges that accept the CAT score for admission into MBA programs. Indian Institute of Management (IIMs) are top of the list of the colleges that accept the CAT score. Needless to say, scoring big in CAT exam can help you get yourself in the top B-Schools in the country.

But what if you score low in the CAT exam? Well, you might not be able to get into an IIM but that doesn't mean that you have no other options. There are several other good b-schools that accept low CAT percentile. The best thing to do in such a situation is to shortlist the colleges that will accept your CAT score and then figure out the best one amongst them.

The other way around you appears for other major MBA entrance exams in the country. XLRI, Symbiosis, and Narsee Monjee are some of the top b-schools in the country and each of them conducts their own entrance exam. You could appear for the entrance conducted by them or for other common national level MBA entrance exams such as MAT, CMAT, ATMA etc. Also, if you are interested in pursuing MBA from a foreign university you can appear for the GMAT exam.

  • ISME Bangalore: Accepts score of not just CAT but also MAT, XAT and ATMA with a cut off ranging in between 50 percentile to 70 percentile
  • IBMT Bangalore: Another institute accepting scores of all the MBA entrance exams conducted at the national level with cut-off being as low as 50 percentile
  • JIMS Delhi: Accepts CAT and MAT with a percentile ranging from 50 to 60
  • EMPI Delhi: Accepts all the exams and a percentile of 50 and above

In addition to this factor, there are several institutes that accept scores of entrance exams other than the CAT percentile. It is not just CAT score that can get you secure an admission in one of the top MBA colleges in India but also several other exams that can be taken in order to do so.

In addition to the acceptance of low CAT percentile, there are several other aspects that are counted while admitting students. This revolves around the fact that academic performance over the years, group discussions (GD), and interview are also considered under the essential pre-requisites while admitting a student. These attributes form a major share of the entrance criteria, giving an advantage to those who have not been able to secure well in the entrance exam. Therefore, in case you have landed up with a low CAT percentile, you can vouch for the personality test as a possible add-on to the achieved scores.

It is not just the marks secured by one in the entrance exam but also that in 10th and 12th along with graduation CGPA or percentage that allows a candidate to secure a place in one of the top MBA institutes. Hence, it is not entirely dependent on your CAT percentile and you still have a high chance of getting through one of the best colleges with low CAT percentile. What matters is that you look at all the right places and ensure that the rounds of personality test are performed well. You simply need to put in all your efforts in the areas that are your strengths, which may include group discussion.

There is no need to lose your heart over low CAT percentile for there are several options of top MBA institutes other than IIMs that accept low CAT score and also the score of other national level MBA entrance exams. All you need to do is stay focused and keep your options open in order to get admitted to the course of your choice.
