Some observations on the IAS Toppers Marks

As you can see that Rank 5 Pratham Kauhik has scored the highest marks in the IAS Main (Written) Exam – 974 but still he got the 5th Rank due to the personality test (PT) marks. Rank 2 Anu Kumari has scored the highest marks among the General Category candidates and was only 2 marks behind the IAS Topper.

There is also a physically handicapped candidate in the top ten this time. Saumya Sharma has secured 9th rank and scored 943 marks.  On analysing the full marks list, it is seen that the last candidate selected in the list is Himankshi Bhardwaj having 830 Marks in total and belong to the Physically handicapped category. One more name which needs mention here is the last selection in the General category without any Physical handicap subcategory is Ashutosh Shukla, who has 548th rank  and 1007 number in total.

Most Important Topics for IAS Prelims Exam

Now we will be analysing the Cut offs for the different categories.

Now when we analyse the UPSC Civil Services Result, we saw the various candidates have same marks but are assigned to the different ranks in the result. The reason behind this is the date of birth of the candidate. The person who is older gets the better rank in the IAS Result if both the candidates have equal marks irrespective of the marks obtained in the different papers and personality test.

How to clear IAS Prelims Exam?

Two persons who also find their name here are Ramit Chennithala Rank 210 and Phurpa Tsering rank 561. They both got the highest marks 206 out of 275 in the IAS Personality Test more than any other candidate even the IAS toppers.

The maximum marks in the IAS Main Witten Exam is 1700 (1000+250+500). 1000 marks for General Studies paper I to IV, 500 marks for the optional subject and 200 marks for the Essay paper. The compulsory language.

The cutoff marks for the general category candidates is 809 marks in the IAS Main Written Exam and 1006 marks in the final selection list. So, now we can chalk out the strategy about how to score in the IAS Main Exam.
What to take from these observations

In General Studies Question papers, if we aim to score 125 marks, on average in all the General Studies Marks then it become the score of 500 marks. The General Studies papers are the levelling field and is equally difficult for all the candidates. So to score better in the General Studies, candidates must practice as much as they can.

Essay and the optional subject can and will play a deciding role in getting the selection in the civil service exam. The candidates know about the optional subjects, but it is the way of representation of knowledge which  makes the difference. The IAS Toppers always stress on the organization and representation of the knowledge in the form of better organized answer covering all the aspects of the topics and adding something extra which can fetch better marks from the competitors.

The IAS Toppers suggest the candidates to provide the examiner more avenues to give you more marks for your answer. Use of maps, flow charts, diagrams which can summarise the whole topic in one place can fetch you good marks. The use of maps, flow charts and diagrams can increase your chances of getting more marks and in addition to that it can help in time management of the paper as writing 100 words would take more time than giving a rough sketch or diagram.

How to write the IAS Main Exam answers ?

The candidates need to do answer writing practice with time management. 7 minutes will be available to write an answer in the IAS Main Exam (Written) in the general studies paper. There will be around 25 questions in each paper except the Ethics paper. The total allotted time is 3 hours or 180 minutes for the general studies paper. So for each question the candidates will get 180/25= 7.2 Minutes. So the candidates will have 7.2 Minutes for every 10 marks.

On a very average answer, the candidates get around 35 to 40 % marks in each question unless something totally out of context is written. So the key is to attempt the full paper of general studies and write all the answers in the stipulated time. The candidates must stick to the time irrespective how much you know about the answer.

So here is the real problem. The real problem is “the problem of plenty”. The candidates have various things on a topic, but they have to write only for 7.2 minutes. So the better way is to practice for the answer writing before hand. The candidates should form the structure for the answer writing and try the format for all the topics so that they can write some things for each topic.

The candidates are required to cover the topic in 7 minutes. They can start practicing with what, how, why, when and which etc. and try to sum up all these components in 7 minutes. However, in our opinion, Why, how and what are the most important components of any topic.
The real art of answer writing as suggested by the IAS Toppers is the courage and confidence to write about those topics which were not studied by the candidates during their preparation. There will be surprises for sure, the success lies in how to handle the surprises in the most efficient way so that the surprise become an opportunity to score better among equals.

Ethics Paper Answer Writing tips

The real demand of this paper as given in the UPSC Civil Services Notification is “This paper will include questions to test the candidates’ attitude and approach to issues relating to integrity, probity in public life and his problem solving approach to various issues and conflicts faced by him in dealing with society”.

Ethics paper can also become a deciding factor if the candidates really prepare for this paper. The Ethics paper tests the ethical integrity of the candidates through various case studies given in the question paper. Here 2nd Administrative Reforms Commission Reports can help but not fully, because the questions always showcase a new angle of the administrative problems. Moreover, the candidates are required to choose the best optimum and ethical decision making without compromising the objective of the organization/Government.

By incorporating all the above tips and strategies in the IAS Main Answer writing, the candidates can achieve success in the IAS Exam and also they can see their name in the TOP 100 in the final UPSC’s selected candidate’s list.
