IIMs got their first woman director since 1961

Find out which IIM has appointed women director for the first time in the history of all the other IIMs. This initiative has enabled the women to break the glass ceiling and take hold of the responsibilities of the premier MBA institute of India

Prof Neelu Rohmetra (from Jammu University) has been appointed as the Director of Indian Institute of Management (IIM) Sirmaur in Himachal Pradesh by Union Ministry of Personnel. According to an order issued by the Ministry of Personnel, the Appointments Committee of the Cabinet has approved Prof Neelu as Director to the prestigious institute for a period of five years. This for the first time in the history of IIMs, that a female director has been appointed and entrusted the responsibility of running the premier institute successfully. Prof. Neelu specialises in HRD and cross-culture management. Currently, she heads the university’s International Centre for Cross-Cultural Research and Human Resource Management. During her current assignment, she is involved with the setting up of the University Institute of Engineering and Technology (UIET) sanctioned under RUSA at Kathua campus. She has also worked as the Regional Coordinator for UNICEF and MHA (Government of India) supported Capacity Building Programme for Census 2011.

Furthermore, the government has appointed heads of 10 Indian Institutes of Management (IIMs), including the first woman to head one of the 20 premier B-schools in the country. List of IIMs who have got the new directors is as follows: Prof Ganesan Kannabiran as Director IIM Bodhgaya, Dr Chandrasekhar Mylavarapu as Director IIM Vishakapatnam, Dr Bhimaraya Metri as Director IIM Tiruchirappalli, Dr L S Murty as Director IIM Nagpur, Dr Mahadeo Prasad Jaisal as Director IIM Sambalpur, Dr Bharat Bhasker as Director IIM Raipur, Dr Dheeraj Sharma as Director IIM Rohtak, Dr Shailendra Singh as Director IIM Ranchi and Dr G Raghuram as Director Bangalore. After these appointments, at present, only 4 of the twenty IIMs remain headless. These are IIM Jammu, IIM Amritsar, IIM Udaipur and IIM Kozhikode.

It should also be noted that these appointements were approved by the committee of cabinet, which was headed by Prime Minister Narendra Modi. The tenure of the new directors will be for a period of five years, or until they turn 65.
