Vardhaman Mahaveer Open University (VMOU) in Kota announced on 26 March 2012 the launch of a two year post-graduate course in police studies through distance education. The unique course will start in July 2012.

Former Border Security Force Director-General ML Kumawat assisted VMOU in preparing the course material for the upcoming course along-with a team of experts and senior police officers designed the curriculum for the course. They include Rajasthan Police Academy Director Bhupendra Singh Yadav, Mahrashtra Police Academy Deputy Director Nikhil Gupta, Raksha Shakti University Vice-Chancellor OP Mathur and PC Mathur and PD Sharma of Rajasthan University's Political Science Department.

The two year post-graduate course in police studies has been designed to benefit students looking to join the police and security forces as well as those seeking employment in the private security sector.

The course which offers both practical and theoretical knowledge will further enhance the candidates' knowledge of internal security, law and order and broaden their vision about policing.

The private security agencies will be able to draw human resource having sound theoretical knowledge required for their work from among the students pursuing the course.

The University requested the State Government for preference to students of the course in appointment to the police service. It must be noted here that in Gujarat police service recruitment, 10 per cent additional marks is given to the students who successfully complete police studies course from Raksha Shakti University.

VMOU is the first Open University in the country to start a course of this nature.
