The QS University Rankings: BRICS 2014 has been released on 17 June 2014. While, there’s a good news that the premier five Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs) -- IIT-Delhi, IIT-Mumbai, IIT-Madras, IIT-Kanpur, and IIT-Kharagpur have managed to retain positions in the top 20 of QS BRICS University Ranking, the bad news is that again no Indian Institutions has found place in the top 10 list.
In total, eight Indian Institutions have made it to the top 50.
As per the "QS University Rankings: BRICS 2014", the IIT-Delhi and IIT-Bombay while showing no improvement have stuck to their positions at 13th and 15th ranks, respectively, as last year. The IIT-Kanpur and IIT-Madras exchanged their positions from last year as the former gone up at 16th positions and the latter slid down to 17th position. The IIT-Kharagpur fell two places down at 20th place, as last year it was at 18th position.
After a huge gap past IIT-Kharagpur at the 20th place, India reappear in the merit list at 37th position with IIT-Roorkee, at 39th with Delhi University, and at 50st rank occupied by University of Calcutta.
The QS University Rankings: BRICS 2014 compared the Top 200 Universities/Institutions in BRICS countries --Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa and has identified China as the most efficient BRICS nations in terms of achieving the goal of developing world-class universities.
Tsinghua University from China has also maintained its position at 1st rank, followed by Peking University, both from China. In fact, China claims six of the Top 10 positions, ahead of Brazil with two places, Russia with one and South Africa with one University.
The Head of Research, THE-QS World University Rankings, Ben Sowter says, “Indian universities have been struggling to keep pace with increasing demand for university education from the country's vast young population. There are now frequent calls for reform of the country's complex higher education system and for universities to become more transparent”.
