Promotion of DSP in RPSC
Promotion is granted to the DSP through the Departmental Promotion Committee, which is headed by the Chairman of the Commission, in accordance with the rules framed by the State Government. Here is the hierarchy of seniority in the Police Department:
Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP)→ Additional Superintendent of Police (ASP) → Superintendent of Police (SP) → Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) → Deputy Inspector General of Police (DIGP) → Inspector General of Police (IGP) → Additional Director General of Police (ADGP) → Director General of Police (DGP)
The DSP gets promotion during the services in the state. The first promotion to the DSP is granted after 7 or 8 years of the service which makes a DSP Additional Superintendent of Police (ASP). After completing 12 or 13 years of the service, the ASP is promoted to the rank of Superintendent of Police (SP) or DCP and the he will get Senior Superintendent of Police rank (SSP) i.e. selection grade. After this, a name list will be sent to the UPSC by the RPCS according to the satisfactory service records of the officers. After that, they will become conferred IPS. There are other ranks that a DSP can reach during his career. But, a DSP has less chances to reach the pinnacle.
