The BPSC recruits administrative officers who receive a handsome salary along with other facilities. The candidates who fare high in the merit list get the post of SDM. Opportunities of Promotion for SDM
Promotion is granted to Officers recruited by BPSC through the Departmental Promotion Committee, which is headed by the Chairman of the Commission, in accordance with the rules framed by the State Government. The BPSC will consider the Officers for the first promotion after 8–9 years of the service and the Officers usually retire after one or at the most two promotions. Though the promotion is slower in comparison to the ones that the UPSC entrants get, yet the BPSC promote its Officers.
The administrative officers may be put either in the field responsibility or in the Secretariat. The Officers in the field duty are SDM who looks after the concerned matters in his area. If the Officers are in field duty, then they have the following matrix of their promotion:

The Officers in the Secretariat plan and formulate the policies of the government and help it implement throughout the state.
