Supreme Court said No to PILs on Policy decisions

Supreme Court Directive for Pay Hike of Judicial Officers

Supreme Court of India in its judgment on 5 May 2010 directed all the states to hike the salaries of all the judicial officers with effect from 01 January 2010. A bench including chief justice K.G.Balkrishnan, Justice Deepak Verma and Justice B.S.Chauhan delivered the judgment after hearing the plea from the All India Judges Association.

NAC Devised New Food Policy

National Advisory Council (NAC) on 14th July2010 decided on a uniform universal entitlement of 35 kg of food grains at Rs 3 a kg per month, for both the APL (Above Poverty Line) and BPL (Below Poverty Line) families, in one-fourth of the country’s blocks, which are recognised as most backward in the country.

More Castes Added to the Central OBC List

On 22nd July 2010, the Union cabinet of India on recommendation of National Commission for backward classes, approved the inclusion of more castes and amendment to the names of the castes and communities in the Central OBC list from the states of Himachal Pradesh, Haryana, Chhattisgarh, Karnataka, Rajasthan, and the Union territory of Daman and Diu.

Indian Government to allow Increase in MBBS Seats

On 30th May 2010 the Union Health Ministry of Indian government announced the increase of MBBS seats in a government medical college from 150 to 250. The government took the decision to overcome the shortage of qualified doctors. The decision will come into effect from the 2011-12 academic sessions.

Amendment Sought in Road Safety Bill

On 21 July 2010, Parliamentary standing committee in its report presented in Rajya Sabha sought amendment in Road Safety and Traffic Management and Board Bill. The committee recommended that the bill which aims only at national highways should be replaced with effective and comprehensive legislation which will cover entire Road network inside the country, not only the national highways.

Cabinet Approved Amendment to Arms Act

The Indian Union Cabinet approved the amendment of Arms Act 1959 on 15 July 2010. The Cabinet had also approved the introduction of the Arms Amendment Bill 2010 in the Parliament. The Union Cabinet approved the amendment of provisions under Section 13 of the Arms Act, 1959 which emphasized on the need to specify a period of sixty days for the purpose of police report required under sub-section (2) of section 13 of the Act.
