  • Andhra Pradesh, Odisha, MP awarded best-performing states in ’Ease of Living Index’ 2018

    The state of Andhra Pradesh has topped the ‘Ease of Living Index’ rankings launched by the Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs. It was followed by Odisha and Madhya Pradesh. The three states were awarded best-performing states at the National Dissemination Workshop on September 24.

  • Supreme Court constitutes committee to look into jail reforms

    The Supreme Court on August 27 had reserved its order on the issue of constituting a committee to deal with issues pertaining to jails and suggest reforms for prisons across the country. The bench was hearing a matter relating to inhuman conditions in 1,382 prisons across India.

  • MPs, MLAs cannot be restricted from practicing law: Supreme Court

    In December 2017, petitioner Upadhyay had addressed a letter to Manan Kumar Mishra, Chairman of Bar Council of India, seeking banning of MPs and MLAs from practicing law. The letter reiterated the decision rendered by the Supreme Court in the case of Dr. Haniraj L. Chulani v. Bar Council of Maharashtra & Goa, 1996, wherein it was held that a person qualified to be an Advocate, would not be admitted if he is in full-time or part-time service.

    The Supreme Court has ruled that candidates cannot be disqualified from contesting elections merely because charges have been framed against them in a criminal case. The court also directed the legislature to consider framing a law to ensure decriminalisation of politics.

    The Union Law Ministry had prepared a document in March 2018, as per which India has 19 judges per 10 lakh people on an average. The document reveals that while the subordinate courts have a shortage of 5748 judicial officers, the 24 high courts face 406 vacancies.
