India and Saudi Arabia sign bilateral annual Haj 2018 Agreement

India and Saudi Arabia on 7 January 2018 signed the bilateral annual Haj 2018 agreement, giving the green signal for India’s decision to revive the option of sending Haj pilgrims through sea route also.

The agreement was signed by Union Minister for Minority Affairs Mukhtar Abbas Naqvi and Haj and Umrah Minister of Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, His Excellency Mohammad Saleh bin TaherBenten at Makkah.

Now, after the signing of the agreement, officials from both the countries will discuss on all the necessary formalities and technicalities so that Haj pilgrimage through sea route can be started in the coming years.

Bengali actor Soumitra Chattopadhyay to be conferred French honour

France would be conferring its highest order of merit, the 'Legion of Honour', on legendary film and theatre actor Soumitra Chattopadhyay at the 42nd International Kolkata Book Fair. The announcement was made by French Ambassador Alexandre Ziegler in New Delhi.

The honour would be bestowed on the veteran actor by the French culture and communication minister Francoise Nyssen in Kolkata. The Dadasaheb Phalke Award winner has acted in several of Satyajit Ray's iconic films including Apur Sansar, Abhijan, Charulata, Aranyer Din Ratri and Sonar Kella.

The 42nd International Kolkata Book Fair will begin on 30 January and will conclude on 11 February 2018.

Car crash kills 5 powerlifters including World Champion Saksham Yadav

World Champion Powerlifter Saksham Yadav along with four other national-level powerlifters was killed after their car met with an accident near the Delhi-Haryana border on 7 January 2017.

The athletes were travelling on the Delhi-Panipat National Highway-1 in a Swift Dezire car, when they met with the accident around 4 am, near Alipur village of Delhi, close to the Singhu border between Delhi and Haryana.

While four powerlifters were killed in the accident, Saksham Yadav, who won a gold medal for India in the 2017 world championships, was seriously injured along with another powerlifter. Yadav later succumbed to his injuries.
