PM Modi and Xi Jinping's informal summit ends: Trade and Terrorism discussed

PM Modi-Xi Jinping Summit: The Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Chinese President Xi Jinping held a second informal summit and a delegation-level talk in Tamil Nadu. It was ended on October 12 as Xi Jinping left for Nepal. It was the second informal meeting between both leaders after Wuhan summit held in 2018. PM Narendra Modi and Xi Jinping hold second informal summit-level talks in Mamallapuram, Tamilnadu.

Chinese President Xi Jinping was accompanied by a 100 member delegation, including Foreign Minister Wang Yi and State Councillor Yang Jiechi. Foreign Secretary Vijay Gokhale said that both leaders held detailed discussions on their respective national vision.

Key Highlights

  • As per the officials of both countries, the focus of the Modi-Xi informal summit was to move forward and make a new pathway of development notwithstanding sharp differences between the two countries over several contentious issues.
  • After detailed talks between PM Modi and Xi Jinping, PM Modi said that both the countries have developed strategic communications to give fresh momentum to the relation of both the countries.
  • PM Modi and Xi Jinping also visited an exhibition on artefacts and handloom at Taj Fisherman's Cove hotel in Kovalam, Tamil Nadu.
  • Xi Jinping came to India after he held a meeting with Pakistan’s PM Imran Khan in Beijing. After that meeting, a joint statement said that China is paying close attention to the situation of the Kashmir.
  • Ministry of External Affairs said that Xi Jinping invited PM Modi to China. PM Modi may visit China next year.

PM Modi’s statement

Prime Minister Narendra Modi said, "We had decided that we will manage our differences prudently and won't allow them to turn into disputes. We will remain sensitive about our concerns and our relationship will contribute towards peace and stability in the world."

Xi Jinping’s Statement

Chinese President Xi Jinping said during the delegation-level meeting that I am happy to be in India. We are overwhelmed by your hospitality. I and my colleagues have felt that this will be a memorable experience for us. The Wuhan summit created a new momentum and confidence in our relations and today's 'Chennai Vision' is the beginning of a new era in India-China relations.
