1.(b) Dominic Thiem
Austria’s Dominic Thiem beat Germany’s Alexander Zverev on September 13, 2020 to win the men’s singles title at the US Open. Thiem lifted the trophy after making a comeback in the five-set long marathon final 2-6, 4-6, 6-4, 6-3, 7-6 (6). This was the first US Open final which was decided by a fifth-set-tie break. 

2.(c) Bahrain
In another historic breakthrough, Israel and Bahrain agreed to establish full diplomatic relations in a joint statement issued on September 11, 2020 between the US, Israel and Bahrain leaders. With this Bahrain has joined the United Arab Emirates in agreeing to normalise relations with Israel, in a US-brokered deal.

3.(b) Yoshihide Suga
Yoshihide Suga, who won the leadership vote of the ruling Liberal Democratic Party (LDP) has been elected as Japan's new Prime Minister by the powerful House of Representatives on September 16, 2020.

4.(c) Harivansh Narayan Singh
The National Democratic Alliance (NDA) candidate, Harivansh Narayan Singh has been re-elected as Rajya Sabha Deputy Chairman by a voice vote on September 14, 2020. He defeated the joint opposition candidate Manoj Jha of Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD).

5.(b) India
India has been elected as a member of the United Nation’s Commission on Status of Women, a body of the Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC). India will remain a member of the prestigious body for four years from 2021 to 2025. 

6.(a) Venus
Scientists revealed on September 14, 2020 that they have detected potential signs of extraterrestrial life on the inhospitable Venus. The scientists have detected a gas called phosphine in the acidic clouds of Venus that indicates microbes may inhabit Earth’s neighbor.

7.(d) Onion
The Union Government on September 14, 2020 banned the export of onions with immediate effect. The order bans export of all varieties of onions except cut, sliced onions or onions broken in powder form.

8.(c)Tata Group
Tata Group has won the contract for construction of India’s new Parliament building with a bid of Rs 861.90 crore, beating Larsen & Toubro. The Central Public Works Department (CPWD) had opened financial bids for the new Parliament building construction on September 16, 2020. The new Parliament building construction is a part of the Central Vista redevelopment project. 

9.(b) 116th 
India has been ranked at 116th  position in the latest edition of the World Bank’s annual Human Capital Index. The index benchmarks the key components of human capital across countries.

India’s four major cities- New Delhi, Bengaluru, Mumbai and Hyderabad witnessed a drop in their rankings in the Global Smart City Index. The index was topped by Singapore. The Smart City Index 2020 was released by the Institute for Management Development (IMD) in collaboration with Singapore University for Technology and Design (SUTD). The index is based on key findings on how technology is playing a role in the COVID-19 era.
