Coronavirus Live Updates India: Prime Minister Narendra Modi today held a review meeting to assess the availability of Medical Oxygen Supply at hospitals and healthcare facilities across the country. With reports of COVID-19 hospitals running out oxygen supply, PM Modi today directed officials from Health, DPIIT, Steel, Road Transport, etc to work in a synchronized manner and ensure that medical oxygen supply remains uninterrupted. He also took a detailed review of current situation of oxygen supply and projected use in the coming 15 days across 12 high burden states.
Among other COVID-19 related news, UP Government has decided to impose a complete lockdown throughout the state on Sunday – 18th April 2021. On Sunday, all businesses and services, except for essential services would remain suspended throughout the same. On similar lines, Chandigarh Administration has also decided to impose weekend lockdown from Friday 10 pm to Monday 5 am. 16 Apr 07:41 PMPSUs Roped into Ramp-up Covaxin Production
The Central Government today decided to ramp-up the production of home-grown vaccine for Coronavirus i.e. COVAXIN in the wake of the 2nd Wave of the pandemic sweeping across the country. The production of COVAXIN would be increased to 10 crore doses per month by September, the Department of Biotechnology said on Friday. Moreover, Covaxin's production will also be doubled by May-June and the department has roped in three public sector companies to increase the capacity of vaccine production, it said.

With the 2nd Wave of COVID-19 worsening, Karnataka state has reported biggest single day spike of 14,859 COVID cases today. As per media reports, the state reported 14,859 COVID-19 new cases and 78 fatalities on Friday. The spike has taken the total case load in the state to 11,24,509 and the toll to 13,190. Bengaluru Urban accounted for the bulk of the cases, with 9,917 infections.

Earlier in the day, Karnataka Chief Minister B S Yediyurappa, SAD Leader Harsimrat Kaur Badal, Congress leaders Digvijay Singh and Randeep Surjewala as well as Gujarat MLA Jignesh Mevani tested positive for COVID-19.

16 Apr 05:17 PMUP sees 19.25 percent hike in daily cases: Health Ministry
As per the statement issued by Union Health Ministry, Uttar Pradesh has witnessed growth rate of 19.25% in daily new Covid-19 cases. Lucknow, Kanpur, Varanasi and Prayagraj are the most affected districts, the ministry added. As of now, it is among the three states in the country to have over 1 Lakh + Active COVID-19 cases. A separate report by PTI claims that UP has seen a record rise of 27,426 Covid-19 cases today.

With rising concerns over unavailability of medical oxygen across healthcare facilities in the country, Prime Minister Narendra Modi today held a high-level meeting to review the situation. In the review meeting, PM Modi addressed officials from Health, DPIIT, Steel, Road Transport, etc and urged them to ensure synergy across all departments, ministries and even state governments. With COVID-19 situation worsening by the day, the Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath has ordered setting-up of a 1000 bed COVID-19 make-shift hospital in Lucknow to tackle the rising number of Coronavirus cases. The decision was taken by the UP CM in a review meeting held with divisional commissioners, district magistrates, chief medical officers and his Team-11 (a core team of 11 officers). In addition to this, he has also directed officials to ensure availability of medical oxygen on a daily basis and review the situation as well.

As the 2nd Wave of COVID-19 hits the country hard, the availability of vaccines has come under a lot of criticism. In order to ramp-up the production in the light of the increased demand for Covishield, Serum Institute CEO Mr Adar Poonawala has urged United States President Joe Biden to lift the ban on export of essential materials for production of the vaccines.

As per the details available on the Health Ministry’s website, after clocking 2 lakh cases yesterday, India’s COVID-19 surge under the 2nd wave continued with the country reporting over 2,17,353 new Covid-19 cases. This has now taken the overall case load to 1.42 crores.

The Central Government has allowed Maharashtra-government owned Haffkine Institute to manufacture Bharat Biotech's Covaxin, on the basis of transfer of technology. Following the decision, Maharashtra Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray thanked Prime Minister Narendra Modi for giving the permission on April 15, 2021.
