First ever Made-in-India train flagged off at Dadar station

Indian Railway minister, Suresh Prabhu flagged off India’s first ever made-in-India train at Dadar station on 18 March 2017.

 Medha Made in India train The first fully made-in-India train, Medha was flagged off at Dadar station on 18 March 2017 for its maiden run to Borivali at Lokmanya Tilak Terminus. The train made stops at Bandra and Andheri.

The 12 coach train, part of India’s Make in India campaign, was flagged off by Railway Minister Suresh Prabhu amidst the presence of Central and Western Railway general manager DK Sharma and other senior officials. The effort aims to boost rail connectivity in the region and enhance the convenience of the people.

Key Highlights

• Two Medha trains were on a trial since the last two years. Both the trains have been designed and built at the Integral Coach Factory in Chennai. They will be running on the Western Railway network.

• It is powered by a Hyderabad-based firm Medha Servo Drives.

• The company has installed LED lighting inside the train, which will help save energy by almost 30-35% in comparison to the existing trains.

• The train also has a special indigenous 3 phase propulsion system unlike the earlier electric multiple units of the Indian railways, which have systems from either Bombardier or Siemens.

• The in-built system will help minimise breakdowns during the travel.

• In costing, the Indian-made train is cheaper than the earlier ones, as it cost about ₹43.23 crore, which is around ₹1 crore less than the German-made Bombardier train, which costs about ₹44.36 crore.

• The train will be able to run at a speed of 110kmph, much above the limit of local trains, which don’t run above 90 or 100 kmph.

• Similar to the existing trains, the train has cushioned seats in the first class and stainless steel seats in the general compartment.

• The train is also equipped with a GPS-based information system with an audio-visual indication of stations and a facility that would help motormen to communicate with a guard in case of emergencies.

• Furthermore, with over 1168 seats, the train has the capacity to hold around 6050 passengers.

Besides this, the Railway minister flagged off the inaugural run of Antyodaya Express, which will be operating between Lokmanya Tilak Terminus and Tatanagar and Miraj- Solapur Express daily train through video conferencing.

The minister also laid the foundation stone for the construction of the fourth railway line between Bhusaval-Jalgaon, a 24-km stretch which will be constructed at an approximate cost of about ₹ 260 crores.
