India’s newest airline Akasa Airline backed by India’s billionaire Rakesh Jhunjhunwala placed a huge order of 72 Boeing 737 Max planes at the ongoing Dubai Air Show. In July 2021, Jhunjhunwala had announced his plans to launch his own ultra-low-cost airline with 70 aircraft in the next 4 years. Akasa Air has received the No Objection Certificate from the Civil Aviation Ministry and the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) for the launch of the airline.

Akasa Air's order of Boeing 737 Max aircraft is one of the largest orders of the Boeing 737 Max aircraft globally and the first order post the two-and-a-half years of regulatory grounding of MAX aircraft. The Boeing Max plane is the same aircraft model that was grounded by DGCA following two fatal crashes in Indonesia and Ethiopia in 2019. On August 26, 2021, the DGCA lifted its ban on Boeing 737 Max aircraft after a two-and-a-half-years regulatory grounding.

The delivery of two models from the 737 Max plane fleet, the high capacity 737-8-200 and the 737-8 aircraft will begin in mid-2022, stated Boeing.
