  • Free Travel for the Physically Challenged

    Haryana Finance Minister Ajay Singh Yadav declared on 8 August 2010 declared that hundred per cent physically challenged persons would now be able to travel free in Haryana Roadways buses to Delhi and Chandigarh for treatment at hospitals. The attendant, who would accompany such physically challenged persons, would also be entitled to free travel in the State Roadways buses.

  • Rajiv Gandhi Khel Ratna Award

    Indian shuttler Saina Nehwal on 30 July 2010 was selected for the prestigious Rajiv Gandhi Khel Ratna award. Nehwal was awarded the Arjuna Award in 2009 and was recently chosen as one of six-brand ambassadors for the Commonwealth Games to be held from 3-14 October 2010. She won three consecutive titles in June 2010 which gave her the number 2 position in the world ranking.

    The Indian Cabinet under the chairmanship of PM Manmohan Singh met on 10 June 2010 and decided to hand over the security of the Rajiv Gandhi Memorial to CISF. The Rajiv Gandhi Memorial stands at Sriperumbudur, Tamil Nadu, the place where he was assassinated in 1991.

  • MSC Chitra Spilled Oil into the Arabian Sea

    MSC Chitra collided with another vessel MV Khalijia III in the Arabian sea off the coast of Mumbai and spilled oil into the sea on 7 August 2010. 400 tonnes of oil is expected to have leaked into the water and spread over a radius of 5 km. The Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB) however sought to calm fears by claiming that the quantity of oil that had spilled was not large enough to cause major harm.
