  • National Florence Nightingale Award, 2010

    Shanti Teresa Lakra was given the National Florence Nightingale Award, 2010 by the Vice president of India on 12 May 2010 for her service to India’s tribal community. In 2001 Lakra was posted to a sub-centre in Dugong Creek which is an island in Little Andaman.

  • Superbug Traced to India

    In a study published in the Lancet Infectious Diseases Journal on 11 August 2010, a team of researchers reported a new gene or superbug called New Delhi metallo-beta-lactamase, or NDM-1. According to the researchers the superbug makes bacteria resistant to all antibiotics including the most powerful carbapenms.

  • Ajmal Amir Kasab Given Capital Punishment

    Pakistani national Ajmal Amir Kasab who was the only survivor of the ten gunmen who carried out the horrific November 26, 2008 terror attacks in Mumbai was given capital punishment (hang until death) on 6 May 2010.  He was tried under India's latest anti-terror law, the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act, 2004.
