According to the report Governments across the world worked collectively to lift 227 million people out of slum conditions, surpassing the Millennium Development target by 2.2 times.

  • Sarath Fonseka- Courtmartialed

    Court martial proceedings against the former Sri Lankan Army Chief, General (retired) Sarath Fonseka, for alleged involvement in politics while in uniform, began on 16 March 2010. This is the first time any Sri Lankan four-star General was court marshaled.

  • Ravi Shankar Honored with Degree of Doctor of Laws

    Sitar maestro Ravi Shankar received an honorary degree of Doctor of Laws from the University of Melbourne at a special ceremony for his outstanding commitment to music and humanity on 19 March 2010. He studied sitar playing under court musician Allauddin Khan. Shankar had worked as a composer, creating the music for the Apu Trilogy by Satyajit Ray, and was also the music director of All India Radio, New Delhi from 1949 to 1956.

  • Girija Prasad Koirala Died

    Napelese democrat Girija Prasad Koirala, who wielded total control in the Nepali Congress from 1990 till recent months in 2010 and stood resolute against royal adventurism passed away on 20 March 2010. He was the last national-level politician of South Asia whose activism spanned the period from the Quit India Movement of the 1940s till current times.

He won $50,000 prize for his math project on Deligne categories which is a setting for studying a wide range of algebraic structures with ties to theoretical physics.

  • Interception capabilities of Missile Tested

    A test was carried out at Balasore, off the coast of Orissa on 15 March 2010 at 10.02 a.m. intended to test the interception capabilities of a 1500 km range missile, at higher altitudes. The variant of Prithvi missile that launched from the Integrated Test Range (ITR) failed to reach the intended height and target.
