Palau, 76th country, signs International Solar Alliance Framework Agreement

Deputy Permanent Representative at India’s Mission to the United Nations, Nagaraj Naidu informed on Twitter that Palau has joined International Solar Alliance.

Palau has signed International Solar Alliance Framework agreement recently. With this move Palau has become 76th country that joined International Solar Alliance. Palau is a part of the Micronesia region in the western Pacific Ocean with over 500 islands.

Deputy Permanent Representative at India’s Mission to the United Nations, Nagaraj Naidu informed on Twitter that President of Republic of Palau H.E. Tommy E. Remengesau has signed Framework Agreement of the International Solar Alliance.

Apart from this, Palau is a host country for 2020 edition of the ‘Our Oceans conference’. This conference will focus on issues such as climate change, sustainable fisheries and marine pollution. Major Countries which have signed agreement until now include India, United Kingdom (UK), Japan, France, Australia, United Arab Emirates (UAE), amongst others.

About International Solar Alliance (ISA)

•    Prime Minister Narendra Modi launched The International Solar Alliance (ISA) with then French President Francois Hollande at the UN Climate Change Conference in Paris in November 2015.
•    ISA is a big global initiative for contributing to the implementation of the Paris Climate Agreement through rapid and massive deployment of solar energy.
•    Mission of the ISA is to provide a dedicated platform for support among solar resource rich countries where the global community, including various organizations, companies or corporates, industry, and other stakeholders, can make a positive contribution to cooperate and help achieve the common goals of increasing the use of solar energy.
•    According to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC), the ISA aims to deploy more than 1,000 gw of solar energy and mobilise over USD 1,000 billion into solar power by 2030.
•    In November 2018, Union Cabinet chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi approved a resolution in first assembly of ISA for amending its Framework Agreement so as to enable membership for all member countries of the United Nations.
