Indian Institute of Science Education and Research, Kolkata, in the first week of March 2011, used a computer model of solar activity to explain how the Sun lost its spots and solar storms for a long period. It further added that the Sun was made up of a hot gas called plasma, which tosses and turns deep inside and creates magnetic field. The sunspots often explode ejecting large amounts of charged particles into space and this affects orbiting satellites, power grids and telecom facilities adversely. The dark spots on the Sun’s surface called sunspots can affect weather in space and can disrupt flights over the polar region of the Earth. The explanation will help airline operators schedule air traffic especially over polar routes and by space agencies in planning mission. Sunspots are dark spots on the Sun with strong magnetic activity.

The research was funded by NASA and the Ramanujan fellowship of India’s Department of Science and Technology. It can help India’s maiden mission to the Sun, Aditya.
