  • Union Sports Ministry Liberalised Import Procedures

    The Indian Union Sports Ministry on 28 Jan 2010 liberalised and rationalised the procedures for importing weapons and ammunition and the resale of used weapons by renowned shooters. The earlier procedure was time consuming and caused escalation of the cost of import.

  • National Team Players Barred from Santosh Trophy

    The All India Football Federation’s (AIFF) Executive Committee on 29 Jan 2010 decided that the National team players would not be allowed to play in the National football championship for the Santosh Trophy.

  • India Exited Asia-Oceania Junior Fed Cup

    India exited the Asia-Oceania Junior Fed Cup under-16 tennis tournament in Kuching, Malaysia, on 29 April 2010 after being defeated by Malaysia. The countries that won their quarterfinals and qualified for the World Group competition to be staged in Mexico in September 2010 were- Japan, China, Uzbekistan and Australia.

  • Chennai Super Kings Emerged Champions of IPL 3

    Chennai Super Kings' became the champion of IPL season 3 after defeating Mumbai Indians at the D.Y. Patil Stadium in Mumbai on 25 April 2010. Sachin Tendulkar was the ‘man of the series’.

  • Chirayu Amin- Interim chairman of the IPL

    The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) appointed vice-president of the West Zone Chirayu Amin as interim chairman of the IPL on 26 April 2010. He succeeded Lalit Modi who ceased to hold all positions (chairman, IPL and Champions League T20 and vice-president, BCCI).

  • Virender Sehwag Named Wisden Cricketer of the Year

    Indian opener Virender Sehwag was in April 2010 named Wisden Cricketer of the Year for the second time in a row. He had competiton from England captain Andrew Strauss and Sri Lankan Tillakaratne Dilshan. Sehwag had a strike-rate of 108.9, in the Tests he played in 2009.

  • M. Shyamlal Lost Appeal

    Kerala weightlifter M. Shyamlal in April 2010 lost his appeal for a reduction in his suspension for an anti-doping rule violation. In a recent decision The Anti-Doping Appeal Panel, headed by retired High Court Judge C. K. Mahajan upheld the initial verdict of a two-year suspension handed out by the National Anti-Doping Disciplinary Panel headed by Dinesh Dayal.

  • Krishnakumar and Saroj Tested Positive

    Two athletes- Krishnakumar Sharma and Saroj Sihag, who were crowned champions in the all-India Police championships in Thiruvananthapuram in February 2010, was tested positive for banned drugs. They were reported by the National Dope Testing Laboratory (NDTL) and currently await disciplinary proceedings to be launched by the National Anti Doping Agency (NADA).

  • Waka Waka Chosen as 2010 Football World Cup Anthem

    A song by pop sensation Shakira and South African band Freshlyground was in April chosen as the official 2010 Football World Cup anthem. The anthem titled ‘Time for Africa’ is expected to be released to radio stations worldwide and would be available for download from 26 April 2010.

  • AKFDC Set Up to Offer Coaching

    The Abhijit Kadam Football Development Centre (AKFDC), a joint venture between Bharati Vidyapeeth, English Premier League Club Liverpool and Kick Worldwide in April 2010 announced the launch of its first football courses. The International Refereeing Course and International Coaching Course will be conducted from April 19 by English FA. Keith Buller, Referees Development Officer for Somerset Football Association and Richard Melin, a qualified FA Referee Instructor and now FA Referee Tutor, would be conducting the courses at AKFDC, with 24 students per batch.

  • Pune Team Launched

    The Pune team of the Indian Premier League (IPL) was launched at the S.P. College ground in Pune on 24 April 2010 by the Sahara India group. The team was named Sahara Pune Warriors and the emblem shows the silhouette of a warrior astride a horse, brandishing a spear in his hand.
