    1. (a) Soumeylou Boubeye Maiga
    Mali President Ibrahim Boubacar Keita appointed Soumeylou Boubeye Maiga as the new Prime Minister of the country. Boubeye Maiga is expected to form a new government following the resignation of his predecessor Abdoulaye Idrissa Maiga and his entire cabinet.

    2. (b) Assam
    The Assam government has published the part draft of the much-awaited National Register of Citizens (NRC) which includes names of 1.9 crore people of total 3.29 crore applicants in the state.

    3. (c) Om Prakash Singh

    Om Prakash Singh, the 1983 batch IPS officer of Uttar Pradesh cadre, will be the new Director General of Police of Uttar Pradesh. He will succeed incumbent Sulkhan Singh. Presently, OP Singh is the Director General of Central Industrial Security Force (CISF).

    4. (d) Vinay Sahasrabuddhe
    Vinay Sahasrabuddhe, the BJP leader and Rajya Sabha MP from Maharashtra, was appointed as President of the Indian Council of Cultural Relations (ICCR). He will succeed Lokesh Chandra. Sahasrabuddhe is the vice-president of Rambhau Mhalgi Prabodhini which is South Asia’s only training and research academy for elected representatives and voluntary social workers.

    5. (a) Pratibha Laxman Gai
    Acclaimed scientist Pratibha Laxman Gai has been named for damehood, the female equivalent of a knighthood, leading a number of people of Indian-origin from various walks of life in the Queen’s New Year’s Honours List 2018.

    6. (b) Israel
    Israel formally notified the UN’s culture and education body of its withdrawal from the organization. UNESCO chief Audrey Azoulay stated that Israel would leave on 31 December 2018.

    7. (c) Nagaland
    Nagaland has been declared as a disturbed area for six more months, till the end of June 2018, under the Armed Forces Special Powers Act (AFSPA). The information was shared by the Union Home Ministry through a gazette notification, in which it stated that it is of the opinion that the area comprising the whole of Nagaland is in such a disturbed and dangerous condition that the use of armed forces in aid of the civil power is necessary.

    8. (a) Tamil Nadu
    The 171st Araadhanai Music Festival of one of the Trinities of Carnatic music, Saint Thyagaraja began in Thiruvaiyaru, Tamil Nadu on 2 January 2018. The festival was inaugurated by the state’s Governor Banwarilal Purohit. Over 1,000 musicians from across the world are expected to pay homage to Saint Thygaraja during the course of the five-day festival.

    9. (b) UAE and Saudi Arabia
    Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates (UAE) introduced the Value Added Tax (VAT) for the very first time on 1 January 2018. The move is a first for the Gulf region, which has long boasted of a tax-free system. VAT is a five per cent tax that will be levied on most goods and services to boost revenue.

    10. (c) Arunachal Pradesh
    Arunachal Pradesh has emerged as the second state in the Northeast, after Sikkim, to be declared Open Defecation Free. The state has 21 districts in total and it managed to attain the feat much before the national deadline of 2 October 2019.

    11. (c) Urdu

    Prominent Urdu poet Anwar Jalalpuri, who translated Bhagwad Geeta into Urdu, passed away in Lucknow on 2 January 2018. The 71-year-old poet wrote 'Rahraw se Rahnuma tak', 'Urdu Shayri Mein Geetanjali' and 'Urdu Shayri mein Geeta'. He was also the recipient of Uttar Pradesh's Yash  Bharti award.

    12. (d) Karnataka

    The state government of Karnataka has received the approval for the purchase of electric vehicles from the Department of Heavy Industry, Government of India, under FAME India Scheme. Under the scheme, the state will purchase 40 electric buses, 100 four wheelers and 500 three wheelers at a maximum of 60 percent subsidy.
