    1. (a) Jammu and Kashmir
    President Ram Nath Kovind on August 21, 2018 appointed Governors for seven states including Bihar, Haryana, Uttarakhand, Jammu and Kashmir, Sikkim, Meghalaya, and Tripura. Bihar governor Satya Pal Malik was appointed as the Governor of Jammu and Kashmir by the President. Malik replaces incumbent NN Vohra, who has been serving this post since 2008.

    2. (b) Baby Rani Maurya
    Former Agra mayor and ex-member of National Commission for Women (NCW), Baby Rani Maurya was appointed as the Governor of Uttarakhand. Maurya is a BJP leader from Agra.

    3. (c) Chandrayaan-I
    Using data from the Chandrayaan-I spacecraft, launched by India 10 years ago, NASA said that scientists have found frozen water deposits in the darkest and coldest parts of the Moon's polar regions.

    4. (d) Ganga Prasad
    Meghalaya governor Ganga Prasad has now been transferred to Sikkim. Prasad was a member of the legislative council in Bihar for 18 years and a former leader of Opposition in the Bihar Assembly.

    SK Arora, the Delhi government’s additional director of health, was honoured with the prestigious World Health Organization (WHO) World No Tobacco Day 2017 Award for his extraordinary contribution towards tobacco control.

    6. (b) Dalbir Singh Suhag
    Former Indian Army Chief General Dalbir Singh Suhag was awarded the United States (US) ‘Legion of Merit (Degree of commander)’ on August 17, 2018, at Pentagon, Washington DC. The award was given to Singh for exceptionally meritorious service as Chief of Army Staff (CoAS) from August 2014 to December 2016.

    7. (a) Chhattisgarh
    The Chhattisgarh government has decided to rename the state’s new capital city Naya Raipur as Atal Nagar in the memory of former prime minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee. The state has also decided to develop an Atal Memorial in an area of five acres at the state’s new capital.

    8. (b) Rahi Sarnobat
    The Day 4 of Asian Games 2018 took off for India with shooter Rahi Sarnobat winning the 4th gold in the finals of women’s 25m pistol event. With the feat, she has become the first Indian woman to win a gold medal in shooting at the Asian Games.

    9. (b) New Delhi
    The President of India Shri Ram Nath Kovind will inaugurate the “International Buddhist Conclave (IBC), 2018” in Vigyan Bhawan, New Delhi on August 23, 2018. The Conclave is being organised by the Ministry of Tourism in collaboration with the State Governments of Maharashtra, Bihar and Uttar Pradesh from August 23- 26, 2018 at New Delhi and Ajanta (Maharashtra), followed by site visits to Rajgir, Nalanda and Bodhgaya (Bihar) and Sarnath (Uttar Pradesh).

    10. (d) Race walk
    Asian Games gold medalist athlete Hakam Singh passed away on August 14, 2018 at a private hospital in Sangrur, Punjab. He was 64. Singh won gold in 20 km race walk event during the 1978 Asiad at Bangkok. The Dhyan Chand awardee had also served as Havaldar in the 6 Sikh regiment.

    11. (c) Kerala
    The UIDAI has directed the Aadhaar enrolment agencies in Kerala, including banks and post offices, to facilitate retrieval of the 12-digit number and provide free printouts to Aadhaar-holders who have lost their document in the flood-hit state.

    12. (c) Thiruvananthapuram
    With several incidents of tropical cyclones and severe weather events striking over Kerala and Karnataka coasts in the recent times, the Union Ministry of Earth Sciences is proposing to set up a Cyclone Warning Centre in Thiruvananthapuram. The Ministry is planning to set up the Centre in another one month.
