Google has dedicated a doodle to Microbiologist Hans Christian Gram on September 13 to mark his 166th birth anniversary. Hans Christian Gram was best known for developing the staining technique. The technique developed by Hans Christian Gram is used to differentiate between bacterial species.

A doodle on Hans Christian Gram was created by Danish guest artist Mikkel Sommer. This doodle shows Google spelt in letters illustrated as Gram carrying out his experiments, his tools, his glasses, microscope and bacteria.

Who was Hans Christian Gram?

• Hans Christian Gram was born on 13 September 1853. He started his career as a general physician in a local civic hospital.
• Hans Christian Gram earned his MD from the University of Copenhagen. Initially, he invented a technique to make bacteria more visible in stained sections of lung tissues.
• He found that treating a thin layer of bacteria placed on a slide for staining followed by an iodine solution and organic solvent can differentiate the structure and biochemical functions of the sample.
• In the year 1900, he was appointed as professor of medicine where he published four volumes of clinical lectures.
• Hans Christian announced his retirement from the University of Copenhagen in 1923 and died in 1938.

Publications by Hans Christian Gram

In 1884 Hans Christian Gram published his findings in a scholarly journal. These findings were termed as “Gram-positive” and “Gram-negative”. Hans Christian Gram had notably included in his publication a modest disclaimer: “I have therefore published the method, although I am aware that as yet it is very defective and imperfect; but it is hoped that also in the hands of other investigators it will turn out to be useful.”
