Kushinagar International Airport Inaugurated by PM Modi on Buddhist Abhidhamma Day: All You Need To Know

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on October 20th 2021, has inaugurated the third of Uttar Pradesh's International Airports in Kushinagar. The inauguration ceremony is especially being held on Abhidhamma Day which is a pious Buddhist Festival. The airport is an attempt by the Indian Government to connect the Buddhist Pilgrimage site with the world.

Kushinagar International Airport Inauguration:

The inauguration of Kushinagar International Airport will take place today, that is on October 20, 2021. The inaugural flight from Colombo, Sri Lanka, carrying a Sri Lankan delegation of over 100 Buddhist monks and dignitaries would be landing at the airport to mark its beginning.  The delegation would include a 12-member holy relic entourage bringing the holy Buddha relics for exposition.

The delegation will have five ministers of the Lankan government led by cabinet minister Namal Rajapakshe.

Kushinagar International Airport: All You Need To Know

  1. Uttar Pradesh has International Airports functional in Lucknow and Varanasi already. Kushinagar airport will be the third to be inaugurated followed by Jewar and Ayodhya Airport that would be inaugurated in 2024 and 2022 respectively. 
  2. Kushinagar happens to be the place where Gautama Buddha attained Mahaparinirvana or Salvation. The place was not that easily accessible due to lack of transport services but now with the airport being inaugurated, the town will become easily accessible by the world. 
  3. Director-General Civil Aviation (DGCA), on February 23, 2021, issued a licence for international flights to Kushinagar airport making it a licensed one. 
  4. It has been built at an estimated price of 260 crore rupees. 
  5. Kushinagar International Airport is going to be India's 29th International Airport.
  6. The airport is spread across 3600 square meters and its new terminal has the capacity to handle 300 passengers during peak hours.
  7. The airport would increase tourism upto 20% in Kushinagar.
  8. Kushinagar International Airport has the longest runway of 3.2 km length in the state and is 45 metres wide.
  9. It has the capacity for four arrivals and four departures of flights per hour.
  10. The airport has a 3,600 square metre interim passenger building and night flight arrangements are also being made here.
