A film festival is an organized, extended presentation of films in one or more cinemas or screening venues, usually in a single city or region. Many prestigious film festivals are organised at global level that not just to promote meaningful films but also gives cinema lovers an opportunity to watch films of different nationalities. The world’s famous and prestigious international film festivals are discussed below:

1. International Film Festival of India


It is founded in 1952 and one of the most significant film festivals in Asia. It is held annually in the state of Goa. This festival is conducted jointly by the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting, Directorate of Film Festivals and the Government of Goa. The prime objective of this festival is to provide a common platform for the cinemas of the world to project the excellence of the film art; contributing to the understanding and appreciation of film cultures of different nations in the context of their social and cultural ethos; and promoting friendship and cooperation among people of the world.

2. Venice Film Festival


It is oldest film festival in the world and founded in August 1932 at Venice (Italy). This festival is basically part of Venice Biennale (Arts organisation based in Venice). It is celebrated on ‘Lido Island’ in Venice city in Italy.

3. Cannes Film Festival


It is an annual film festival held Cannes, France which previews new films of all genres, including documentaries from all around the world. It was founded in 1946. Palme d'Or ("Golden Palm") is the most prestigious award of this festival.

This festival is an important showcase for European Film because it gives massive media exposure; the non-public festival is attended by many movie stars and is a popular venue for film producers to launch their new films and to attempt to sell their works to the distributors who come from all over the globe.

4. Berlin International Film Festival


It is one of the most prestigious awards of the world. It was instituted during 1951 in Berlin. “Golden Bear” and “Silver Bear” is famous award of this. This festival has been held every February since 1978 and is one of the "Big Three" alongside the Venice Film Festival and Cannes Film Festival. This festival awarded in seven different film sections -Competition; Panorama; Forum; Generation; Perspektive Deutsches Kino; Berlinale; and Retrospective.
