What is ‘Meghalayan Age’ in Earth’s history?
In the Earth's history, geologists have discovered a distinct Earth age and it is related to India's Meghalaya. Let us tell you that the history of Earth began 4200 years ago and the scientists named it as 'Meghalayan Age'.
Do you know that we are living in the Holocene Epoch period, which is 11,700 years old? That is, a mega global drought that devastated ancient agricultural civilisations from Egypt to China is the Meghalayan age and is a part of longer the period Holocene which reflects everything that had happened over the past 11,700 years.
It is being said that the 'Meghalayan Age', the youngest stage, runs from 4200 years ago to 1950.
According to the scientists, when the Meghalayan Age began i.e. 4200 years ago, there was a sudden drought worldwide and the temperature had declined. Because of this, many civilizations were destroyed in the whole world.
First we will study about “Meghalayan Age”.
Geologists divide the 4.6-billion-year existence of Earth into several parts. Every part is based on significant events such as breakdown of continents, sudden changes in the environment, or the emergence of particular types of animals and plants on the earth. Currently we live in the Holocene, which reflects everything that has happened over the past 11,700 years. Due to the changes in the weather we came out from the Ice age as the weather became hot.
Holocene further is subdivided into three parts: the Greenlandian, the Northgrippian, and the youngest the Meghalayan. The Greenlandian runs from 11,700 to 8,200 years ago; the Northgrippan runs from 8,200 to 4,200 years ago, and finally, the Meghalayan runs from 4,200 years ago to present.
However, the International Commission on Stratigraphy (ICS) has a famous diagram known as the International Chronostratigraphic Chart that depicts the timeline chart in which the Holocene age has been divided into 3 subdivisions and they have been named Greenlandian, Northgripion and Meghalayan.
Why “Meghalayan Age” is named after Meghalaya?
An International team of researchers collected some stalagmite which was deposited on the floor by plunging into the roof of the cave in Meghalaya. This helped the researchers to define the climate of that time in the history of the Earth. For this reason, the 'Meghalayan Age' has been named after Meghalaya.
Do you know that this cave named Mawmluh, located at an altitude of 1290 meters in Meghalaya, is one of the longest and deepest caves in India?
What happened when the ‘Meghalayan Age’ began?
The Meghalaya age, the youngest age began with a destructive drought, whose effects lasted two centuries or 200 years and severely disrupted civilizations in Egypt, Greece, Syria, Palestine, Mesopotamia, Indus Valley and Yangtze River valley.
Do you know what is Geological Age and how it is calculated?
Actually, you cannot guess the age of rock just while seeing it. Isn’t it? We all have read that the earth is 4.6 billion years old and 65 million years ago the dinosaur had vanished. But have you ever wondered how do scientists actually identify the age? They do this by Geologic Age Dating, where they specify the age of an object, such as rock and then calculate the history of the earth over time. In addition to the past of Earth, such as breakdown of the continents, climate change, etc.
The topic of this study is called Geochronology and it involves many researches done by scientists like calculating or telling the age of an era, time, a rock and some major events, etc. We all know that the present age is called 'Meghalayan Age' and its time has been calculated from 4,200 years ago to the present.
So we have studied through this article that a new geological period in the Earth’s history has been discovered and named it as 'Meghalayan Age'.
