The T20 World Cup 2021 final is being played between Australia and New Zealand in Dubai at Dubai International Stadium. Australia won the toss and opt to bowl first.

The Australian Captain Aaron Finch said, "Looks a little bit dry but I don't think it will change. It might skid with the new ball. We're playing the same team. The way we hung in the contest and take it deep was crucial for us. Zampa has been superb for a while in the shortest format, and hopefully that will continue. It is a new format, a new team and our record over New Zealand doesn't matter at all."

The event which was to be held in India shifted to UAE and Oman due to the COVID-19 situation in India. BCCI, however, will continue to be the host of the event.

The most awaited match between two arch-rivals, India and Pakistan took place on 24 October 2021 and for the first time in T20 World Cup, Pakistan won the match, thereby breaking the jinx against India.

When the venue of the T20 World Cup was shifted to Oman and UAE from India, Acting ICC CEO Geoff Allardice said, “Our priority is to deliver the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2021 safely, in full and in its current window. Whilst we are incredibly disappointed not to be hosting the event in India, the decision gives us the certainty we need to stage the event in a country that is a proven international host of multi-team events in a bio-secure environment. We will work closely with the BCCI, the Emirates Cricket Board and Oman Cricket to ensure fans can enjoy a wonderful celebration of cricket.”

At that time, President BCCI Sourav Ganguly said, “The BCCI is looking forward to hosting the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2021 tournament in UAE and Oman.  We would have been happier hosting it in India but considering the uncertainty due to the Covid 19 situation and the importance of a world championship, the BCCI will now continue to host this tournament in UAE and Oman. The BCCI is looking forward to creating a spectacle.”

The seventh ICC Men's T20 World Cup tournament was scheduled to be held in India for the first time from October to November 2021. In August 2020, ICC confirmed Sri Lanka and the UAE to be backup venues for the tournament. The tournament was originally scheduled to be held in Australia, but owing to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, it was postponed until 2021.

In April 2021, the CEO of ICC Geoff Allardice confirmed that backup plans are still in place if India is unable to host the tournament due to the horrific COVID-19 pandemic. BCCI's Dhiraj Malhotra has confirmed that the UAE would be used as a contingency if the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic continues to worsen in India.

On 17 April 2021, BCCI proposed the name of the cities which are scheduled to host the upcoming matches-- Bangalore, Chennai, Dharamshala, Hyderabad, Kolkata, Lucknow, Mumbai, and New Delhi. Ahmedabad is proposed to host the final match of the 2021 ICC Men's T20 World Cup.
