Waves are the oscillatory movements in water mainly produced by the winds, manifested by an alternate rise and fall of the sea or ocean surface. Besides wind-produced other types of waves include catastrophic waves (sudden, violent and temporary), storm waves and seiches (stationery waves). They are an important agent of erosion in the coastal regions where they sculpt and carved out various landforms like caves, bays and gulfs, capes and cliffs.
Why does Waves break?
Waves break when they become too high to be adequately supported. As a series of the wave’s approaches shore, the loud waves are in the shallow water and moving slowest. The rear waves gain on them, and waves become concentrated in a narrow zone, and so the waves decreases. The water and energy of each wave become concentrated in a narrow zone, and so the wave grows taller. The water’s orbital velocity increases, but the wave decreases. Eventually, the orbital speed is larger than the wave breaks. The waves break when they reach a depth measured to the still water level that is about 1.3 times the wave height.
What is Sneaker Wave?
The extremely large wave that can sometimes appear in a wave train without warning is called Sneaker Wave. This is coastal wave which appear unexpectedly larger size as compared to the normal waves. It is called as King Wave because of larger size. It is also called Sleeper wave because it appears unexpectedly.
How does Sneaker Waves occur?

Troy Nicolini (a meteorologist and an oceanographer of North-western California) states that the energy of the surges which are formed by the strong winds transfer to the ocean surface. The transferred energy at the ocean surface increases the anatomy of the ocean waves and causes sneaker waves.
Some of the oceanographer opines that sneaker waves are the outcomes of the combination of overlapping of fast moving waves.
Where is the Sneaker Waves Occurs?
According to the report of the Oceanographers, the sneaker waves occur along the Pacific Coast of Oregon, coasts of northern California and Washington. This type of wave is also experience by the Coastal region of Canada, Iceland, Western Australia and Tasmania.
How do sneaker wave differ from tsunamis?
The Sneaker waves are the extremely large wave that can sometimes appear on an envelope of localized wave action without warning. Whereas Tsunamis are unlike wind-generated waves, which is observed on a local lake or at a coastal beach that occur with long periods and wave lengths. The sneaker waves are wind-driven whereas Tsunami is a seismic sea wave.
