Galgotias Universitywas established by Uttar Pradesh under Section 2(f) of the UGC Act 1956 vide The Galgotias University Uttar PRadesh Act, 14 of 2011 under the sponsorship of Smt. Shakuntala Educational and Welfare Society. The university commenced its operations from the 2011-12 academic year.

The institute began its academic session with 1700 UG and PG students in 2011.  The university has a total of 13 schools, 19 departments and 53 UG, 36 PG and 25 PhD programmes. The courses offered by the university also have approvals from various councils including Pharmacy Council of India, Bar Council of India, Indian Nursing Council, Council of Architecture, National Council for Teacher Education, Norms of National Council for Hotel Management.
