Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Banaras Hindu University (BHU), Varanasi was established in 1919 as Banaras Engineering College. Later in 2012 it was given its current name- IIT BHU. IIT (BHU), Varanasi is an institute of National importance under the Act of the Parliament through the Institutes of Technology Act 2012. The institute first started degree courses in Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering and Metallurgy and Pharmaceuticals and was later followed by the Geology department where courses in Mining and Metallurgy were introduced. IIT BHU, Varanasi has four key departments: Engineering, Humanities, Schools and Science department.
Under engineering department courses such as Ceramic engineering, Chemical engineering, Electrical engineering and Mining engineering are offered. Whereas the school department comprises School of Biochemical and engineering, School of Materials Science and Technology and School of Biomedical Engineering.
